Upgrade '91 turbo Legacy Suspention

Post by lankydude03 »

Earlier I had placed a post saying how I don't really know what to
put on my car to upgrade it. I decided to start with the
suspention. So now I want to know, what in the world to do? Strut
bars? if so what kind? front, back, or both? shocks? springs? what
things and what types? Help! Oh and money is somewhat of an issue.
So great stuff, but not exactly the most expensive.

Upgrade '91 turbo Legacy Suspention

Post by Sam & Beth Barrett »

If you are going to start with suspension (wise decision) I'd begin with the
rubber. I've spent a long time working this angle and I've saved up my lunch
money for a while... This is what I'm having done to my car in ~3 weeks:

1. New Rubber and rims
Rubber = Supitomo HTRZ II 205 45's ($380 after tax, mounting, etc.)
Rims = 16x6.5's off of an Outback

Why? Better rubber means better cornering, stopping, and overall road
surface handling. Bigger rims will give you more surface area contact and
accomodate:

2. Beefier brakes
Calipers = WRX
Rotors = WRX
Pads = Mintex green
Braided hose = Whatever. I forget their name.

Why? Better braking power means you can go farther into a corner after the
other guy has to hit his brakes. That equates to better lap times. Or if
it's not course performance on the table, at very least I won't have to
worry about warping my rotors (I'm on set #3) because the non-turbo flavor
BC-BF came with wimpy brakes and solid (no vents) rotors. They'll still
warp, but I'll have to work a little harder to do it. So for the non-tarmac
oriented, one might want to skip the brakes and go for:

3. Suspension
Struts = KYB
Springs = KYB

Why? Expense. The wife wouldn't let me loose with the wallet for the DMS. I
would have re-established the food chain in the house, but I decided it
wasn't worth it for automotive toys. So I get a cheaper product that is
still adjustable. The wife can fetch groceries in comfort, then I can adjust
it for cone bashing on the weekends.

Next on deck: Windshield (it's got a massive crack from a rock). Then on to
more performance stuff.

My reccomendation: Always start at the wheel for best "bang for buck"
upgrades. Then work your way into the engine compartment from there. It's
not a rule. It's just what I work with. People with different desires will
do different things to achieve their results. Straightline performance guys
will go for HP and start in the engine bay.

01=my two bits.
