The Great 1st Gen Legacy Spring Debacle

Post by Josh Colombo »

Well,

Since I decided to order some whiteline springs a while ago, and really haven't heard much recently......and then hearing some issues about fitment problems....I decided to do a little more pavement pounding on the manufacturer's side of things.

Adam posted a little bit ago about fitment of springs for his turbo legacy, which he did also in the i-club legacy forum. Another member over there has been messing with his 90 wagon for quite some time trying to get the correct springs.

Here's the link to the thread http://forums.i-club.com/forums/showthread.php?s= <http://forums.i-club.com/forums/showthr ... did=205825> &threadid=205825 The second page is where the numbers, spring rates and such start to fly.

But here is the gist of what I got from talking with whiteline
(my comments in black, whiteline rep's in blue and with a [WR] in the beginning)

Since the time of order some things have come up with some other early gen legacies about fitment issues. It seems that the 1990-1991 Legacies have tapered springs in the rear, and the 1992-1994+ do not have these tapered springs.

[WR] It is true that we have discovered that some Subaru Liberty - North America uses difference springs then to Asia/Australia models. However both are tapered springs. We have made appropriate note in our spring catalogue that will enable for correct springs to be ordered. This will be updated in the next catalogue release.

I would just like to clarify and get your (manufacturer's) ear on fitment issues and such due to the rear springs being different then on the AWD legacies, and on the rear springs being tapered on the 1990-1991 Legacies.

[WR] Whiteline have the following springs available for Subaru Liberty 90 FWD,
Control front - part# 74502
Control rear - part# 70368 *

(*) - Check top and bottom I.D. of the original spring.
If top I.D.=125mm and bottom I.D.=141mm then use part# 70369.
If top I.D.=95mm and bottom I.D.=138 then use part# 70368.

I was also curious if you have spring rate values for the springs I am trying to get for my car.

[WR] Front spring part# 74502 is rated at about 190 Lbs/in, linear rate. Rear spring part# 70369 is rated at about 200 Lbs/in, and part# 70368 is rated at about 180Lbs/in, are both are progressive design.

In the i-club thread I have listed what the stock spring rates are for my car, to get some comparison.

This may just be an FYI post.....but hopefully it clears some stuff up.

Josh
