Did i bend my valves

Post by J-MoNeY »

My timing belt broke and i had to chug it outa traffic in order not to get killed. Are these engines Non-Interference?

I believe they are non-interfernce, but I'm not 100% on that.

They are not. DOHC engines are valve to valve interferance though.

Yes, non-interference valve-valve (SOHC) and valve-piston. The turbo engine has dished pistons to reduce the compression ratio.

So thats a yes to i didn't bend my valves? It was nuts. My car jsut started chugging, and I was all what the hell? So i step on the gas and the harder I pushed on the pedal, it made no difference, the RPMs would just drop. SO i pull it into a parking lot and try to get it started, cause i figured it was something in the fuel system or something, but when I had my hood open the right side of the engine was running fine and the left side was shaking horrably. It just kept dying. As far as I know the old 88 Subaru I had was a 2 belt system, and I assume that they kept this for the timing belts on my 93?! But I am not sure. As far as I could see, it looks like I'll need to take off the main crank pully and just remove the timing cover and make sure i get the timing marks all lined up. Is that about correct? :?:

They use one belt nowadays. You're correct, just line up all the timing marks on the crank and camshaft sprockets with the ones on the belt and you will be fine.

So does it sound like it is a timing belt. Cause this engine is all new to me and I think I diagnosed it correctly.

You only have one belt.......I don't really know how only one side of the engine would work, unless you have some seriously screwed up stuff.

You can check out the fsm scans I have for the t-belt changing procedure

$J-MoNeY-$:How can you tell if one side of the engine is fine and the other is shaking?! They are connected! If the timing belt is broke the car will not run.

Thawa was saying that you have NOT bent the valves if your timing belt broke.

Coincidentaly I have an XT6 with a broken drivers side timing belt at the moment, which uses the dual belt system. (unlike our legacy's which use a single belt)

The car will still turn over cause the starter is still turning the flywheel. It is just not running. I have no idea what the hell one side of the engine was shaking harder than the other.

Is the NA2.2 interference

Post by G-reg »

I just posted concerning my H2O pump puking antifreeze on my timing belt, I thought I read somewhere that the 2.2 is piston/valve and valve/valve interference. Is it just the 2.5s that have the 2cam heads, and thus just those motors that are valve/valve? Apologies for going OT

All 2.2 liter subie engines are non-interference.

All DOHC subie motors are interference

the 2.5's can get a little trickier.....

Well I fixed it today. Fuel pump. I was way off base. Anyways, it pulls considerably harder and runs great now.

edit by jason: FIXED dude, not DIXED... hehehehe...

Did you replace it with an OEM fuel pump or some other aftermarket pump? Regardless, how much was it if you don't mind my asking?

I replaced it with the OEM pump. It was 120 dollars. But the sock will cost extra.
