my dad complains that the headlights on our 92 legacy LS are very dim, and that its really hard to see anything in front of you even with teh headlights on at night
can we just replace the headlights? i was thinking of adding a front underbody thing and wiring two extra lights on those, would that work?
or what would be the most cost effective solution?

The headlights on your 92 could be pretty decent, actually. I'd suggest these four things first:
Make sure the aim of the lights is correct (I believe you would aim these as ECE lights):

If the lenses are yellowed at all, fix that. They should be crystal clear:

Get good quality high-performance bulbs. The easiest ones to find will likely be Sylvania Xtravisions:

Upgrade the wiring harness. Install heavy gauge wire and relays controlled by the stock wires:

After this your father will have better seeing than the vast majority of vehicles on American roads. If he still feels like he needs more, then you could add auxiliary low beams and such.

This sounds like the "yellowed, fogged up headlights" problem. If you look around, you can find a lot of old threads about this exact question.
I went to the local auto parts store picked up some plastic polish. First I used Turtle Wax Rubbing Compound followed by Turtle Wax Polishing Compound. The whole process took about $5 of money and 10 minutes of time. Not bad considerint it worked like a champ - went from a dull, barely-visible glow to a peircing beam. It's not a permanent fix, but it lasted me a good 6 months before I had to repeat it.
Look around and you will find dozens of other recomendations including sandpaper of various grits, or they will recommend Mother's Mag Polish.

Yeah, polish will definitely help somewhat. It gets almost all the yellow out but leaves some of the cloudiness. The only way to get it 100% is probably the acetone/sandpaper followed by clear coat. Or buying new headlamps. :)

yup.....my method is the only method that will get them 100% crystal clear and keep them that way. I have had zero return of any yellowing.
