Variable valve timing in STI DOHC

Ok I've noticed that the STI gets better gas milage than our cars. Not only that, but the recent WRX's also get better gas milage usually. Does the DOHC help in that? Does this "variable" valve timing stuff help in that as well?

we are down from stock usually, newer cars have a taller 1st gear, 10 years of tuning the engine has benefits, better electronics, often lighter weight, variable valve timing helps, less displacement...
