I finally got my home built LSD installed. My first test was a dirt lot close to me house.
WOW! The throttle pedal is now a perfect YAW control! It was easy to apply just the right amount of throttle even though it was my first time. I feel I would be considerably faster in a rallycross course now. With the locking action of the center differential and power now to both wheels the car behaves far more like a rear wheel drive. Most of the time the front wheels just spent time throwing dirt around and acting like rudders. The dirt I was driving in was very soft, almost baby powder consitancy.
I put the car up on 4 jackstands to measure the actual force that the LSD would transmit at low speeds. It was very hard to hold the wheel in place at idle.
One suggestion, ALWAYS remove the studs from the differential on installation and if at all possible on removal. It will make the job 10 times easier.
I did the installation in my driveway with the car on jack stands. I did the ring and pinion swap in my garage. Originally I planned to use the complete LSD assembly and swap a 4.11 ring and pinion. Instead I used the 4.11 housing with 4.11 pinion installed with the rest of the components from the LSD (stubs, differential, back plate, bearings, side seals/races).
I had never done a differential swap or ring and pinion swap for the matter. Id say total time (not counting waiting in between) would have been 5 hours total.
I like LSD
