EJ22T? Build it or sell it?

Post by Subleg4 »

I have the EJ22T in my 92 right now with a couple little things done. But I can get a EJ20TT for $2100 w/o intercooler, I was looking for opinions if I should take out my engine and have it built with bigger turbo (VF23), fuel system, etc..... or build the EJ20TT? just looking for some opinions thanks

Whoa, you don't want that crappy EJ22! Get the EJ20TT. It doesn't matter if it's a nightmare to fit or tune (you don't have a postal car, do you?). In fact you should just get rid of that EJ22 as quick as you can... I know of a guy who would cover shipping costs to get it to him just because he's such a humanitarian and wouldn't want to see you stuck with that ugly lump of hazardous waste.

Hey evolution, If you go aheda and re-read my post I'm pretty sure that at know point in it did i say "I dont want my crappy EJ22" I know my motor is a good strong motor, I was looking for OPINIONS and what I should do I am not that informed on the EJ20TT which is why I posted so if you are not going to post anything that helps me out dont post at all

My suggestion for an "easy" install and a KILLER motor would be:

Stroker kit for the ej20 (perhaps 2.4l) and revert to a single turbo.

Going to a single turbo has a huge number of advantages, including the use of just about any aftermarket exhaust components and ease of tune and installation.

Without knowing anything personally from everything I have read the TT engines have the most refined flow, from the throttle plate to the exhaust outlets. In other words two cars in the exact same level of tune and configuration (both running single turbo) the TT engine should have better power ratings.

rebuild the ej22t it has better torque, closed deck.If you want more displacement get the stroker kit for the 2.2 and go to 2.4,bigger turbo, intercooler and a couple other things and you'll have a torque beast.
Imho if you have the money to buy the ej20tt and do the swap you can invest the money in your ej22t and have much more power and torque.you could even afford an ecu upgrade probably......ok now I'm drooling all over the place.thanks! :)

Hey man, I was just joking around - as if trying to convince you to get rid of the motor since I'm looking for an EJ22 turbo... Well, I thought it was funny... :(

Anyway, the EJ20TT is a difficult instal (mainly because of the twin turbo set-up's interference with the left-hand steering. A postal Legacy (right hand drive) might be an option if you can find one, but I'm not sure about the crossmember required. Otherwise, you could probably fabricate some kind of custom exhaust to incorporate the two turbos on left hand drive or as ciper said convert it to single (and at least take advantage of the better breathing dohc heads). I know the TTs in Japan are tuned to a lower HP rating, but I believe they're more set up for low-end torque than the Imprezas' single turbos, which leads me to believe the turbos lose efficiency at higher rpm plus there's probably a relatively conservative tuning for the ECU.

Sorry for any confusion, should have put a smiley.

Well I must like you guys because I don't think it has been done, just talked about. I really want to do it but as I won't be for a few years I'll give away the secret.

I have seen at least 10 different ones there in the past few months. There is one guy named Tim that buys everyone he can find throughout the country and then sells them. Anyhow, you all now have my permission to run out and buy one and put the EJ20TT in it. Won't be the fastest Legacy. Won't be real tunable. Will be the first EJ20TT RHD Legacy in the States that I know of and I have searched. If anyone can find someone who has done the swap let me know. If anyone wants more info, like where to get the engine, etc. let me know. I have spent hours researching this. Mile Hi Al said that he can import the engine. I think a front clip would be the best way to go with a 95-99 Chassis. Plus then you can get those cool twin headlight that aren't made for our models but are for those. :D
