Identifying a EJ22t block...

Post by Opie »

Are there any casting numbers, etc. on an EJ22t block that is a unique identifyer for the engine. I ask because I pulled a complete engine out of a '91 SS at the u-pull yesterday that has a few very minor differences compared the motor in my current '91 SS...just wanted to be sure that it was indeed a EJ22t block.

Having seen the picture you posted in the other thread, I am pretty sure it sia turbo block because of the overflow reserrvoir black box that does not appear on NA EJ22's As for casting number or marks, the two sides of my block have 11 45 and 11 46 respectively. It also has a serial number of 529986 stamped on it. You may not be abel to see these numbers until you pull the intake manifold. BTW, mine is from a 92...

Thanks for the quick reply! Does your blocks front timing cover have "Subaru Turbo" molded into it? My current running '91 Legacy does, but the block I pulled does not....minor difference...but it just seemed odd.

I'll probably start tearing it down this afternooon, then I can get a better look at the block...

The water pump elbow also points to the side on the turbos.

The rear passenger head has a pressurized oil outlet, a coolant return hose and an oil drain line.

Looks a little orange and crusty in the water passages...

haha, Looks like you trashed the intake manifold! I know some guy that might want those injectors and fuel rails, but he's kinda broke right now and he isn't sure if those will fit on my car ;p

Nah, it's not trashed. Just stored it (and everything else that was good) in that bin for storage. I won't be needing it so if you know someone who might...let me know. It has only the drivers side injectors and fuel rails...the passenger side injectors and fuel rails were already missing....

You should be careful where you toss stuff like the intake manifold for storage; you don't want anything hard to mar the gasket sealing surface on the bottom of the manifold.

Yup.

Well, actually, it's going to the oil cooler above the filter.

There's no oil cooler there! I just see a big gob of oily grease with a line going to it! ;)

vrg3 the intake is actually on it's side, the sealing surface of the one side is against the plastic bin, the other side is in the air. I'm going to tape some cardboard over them tonight and put everything in a proper box...or ziploc. I don't want to damage anything that is still useful :)

That's not oily grease; the motor just secreted a layer of anti-corrosion material over itself. :)

Cool, I just wanted to make sure you realized that the surfaces could be marred fairly easily. I usually tape cardboard or cloth over them too. And ziploc bags are awesome.

Yeah, those coolant passages are nasty...any ideas on what I should flush through there to clean them out?

The majority of the parts will be sold...I pretty much just need the shortblock...Once I get the block completely torn down I will sort through what I have that isn't needed and is still in good shape and let everyone know...do you see something in particular you need?

I wouldn't mind the oil cooler.

What do you clean out the coolant passages with? I want to do that to mine, although it doesn't look bad at all - I just want to make sure there's nothing in them.

Sorry, I need the oil cooler... :) I don't know what to clean those out with, I'll try just flushing water through them and see what happens....

Don't they make "cooling system flush" type chemicals?

If it's got a turbo attached (or had), then it's probably an EJ22T.
