2.2T vs 2.5T?

Post by 93Leg-c »

I haven't driven, nor been in, a 2.2T Suby yet. But I've driven the Forester XT with the 2.5T engine, both auto and 5 spd. For those of you with the turbo engines, have you driven the Forester 2.5 turbo, and if so, how do both engines compare as regards torque and driveability?

Driven both (well my sedan and a Forester XT).

No doubt the XT is quicker. That's a high 13 second station wagon right there. Potential is about the same (as with all Subaru's really). The tranny is the weak point. If you do it right, you'll blow the tranny and diffs before you blow the engine.

Driveability, my sedan is wicked torquey, but the XT is also.

Think of the XT as the Touring Wagon Plus. You could make a touring wagon compete with an XT for less money, but the XT is newer.

Your call.

Realize that the 2.2 turbos came ridiculously undertuned from the factory; a stock Legacy Turbo isn't all that fast.

Thanks for all the feedback! Sooo. . . can any of your 2.2Ts beat a stock XT in the 1/4 mile?

I have no doubt that your cars will out-handle the XT any day.

vrg3, since the 2.2ts came ridiculously undertuned from the factory, is that possibly why there was not much interest in purchasing the '90-'94 turbos? (I think another thread had the stats of the 2.2Ts purchased in the US) I recall test driving the pre-'90 turbo--boy, was it sad disappointment!

I think boostjunkies car was one of the quickest rides here, he had a different turbo along with an intercooler and turbo-back exhaust. He was wiating for larger injectors. But fate turned its head and the car got wrecked about a month ago. That car was easily a mid 13's car. With injectors and more boost , it woulda been in the 12's. I think Kelly also has a very fast car but don't know the specifics. I don't know why the north american varients were so detuned. Oversea's spec legacy turbos made 200 hp and the jdm ones 220. The STi version made 230 hp stock
