VSS

Post by THAWA »

Looks as if I'm getting a CEL for 33 the VSS. Does anyone know how to diagnose the vss and just where is it located? How would one go about replacing it?

It's a magnetic reed switch built into the speedometer's body, if I remember right.

You can test it just by hooking a voltmeter to it and watching the signal as the car moves. It should just alternate between 0 and 5 volts as the car moves, with a frequency increasing as the car accelerates.

I think you're supposed to replace the gauge cluster if you need to replace the VSS. It's probably possible to just swap the speedometer assembly from another gauge cluster into yours. Or maybe even just the reed switch part...

The problem could also be in the speedo cable... does your speedometer read correctly?

my speedo has been fine all the time except for once. I was accellerating normally, and it jumped up about 10 mph in a second or two. I've got a spare clutster here, but the mileage is off, how do I go about setting it to the correct mileage?

Maybe you could somehow adapt a power drill to the speedometer cable attachment? If nothing else it seems like you could get a spare speedometer cable, hack it in half, strip back part of the outer protective layer, and grip the part of the cable sticking out with the chuck of a drill.

So does your speedo currently work, and you're just getting a VSS CEL?

Hey, you should try to get the scan tool hooked up so you can check what the ECU thinks it's reading from the VSS.
