Need to replace rear main seal and timing belt..what else?

Post by DeusExMachina »

Hi. I need to replace my rear main seal, and I'm thinking I better do my clutch at the same time since it's making noises and probably the original 122,000 mile clutch.

So besides that, is there anything else to do back there at the same time? Want to get the most for my labor fees. :) Anyone know how many hours the rear main seal is, or where I can find it in the FSMs? I looked but couldn't find.

Also I need to do my timing belt which I'm going to see if the shop will do since I don't feel like all that effort in my driveway. I'll flush the coolant, replace the water pump, but what else is there?

Is there anything else you could recommend replacing at 122,000 miles? I did the fuel filter, doing the air filter, valve cover gaskets and serp belts. Some of the struts are leaking, but thats not a priority at the moment.

If you can replace the waterpump you can replace the timing belt, infact, you cant replace the water pump without removing the t-belt. As for other things to do, resurface the flywheel, new pilot bearing, new throwout bearing and clips. New idler pulleys for the timing belt, oil pump, t-belt tensioner, cam seals. All of those can be replaced if you want to, but aren't exactly somethign you HAVE to do, though I dunno about oil pump.

Hm, I don't know about all that. Its a lot of work. So the laundry list is:

Timing belt
Oil pump
Water pump
T-belt tensioner and idler pulley
Cam seals

Anything else?

Oh okay I get what you were saying :)

Why not resurface the flywheel, and put new bearings on?

As for the rear main seal, once the engine is out of the car, as I did it, it takes about 3 minutes to pry it out and 5 minutes to put the new one in. So maybe 10 minutes for the actual job.

Oh I will, but I was planning on buying a complete WRX clutch/flywheel (its only compatible when you get a flywheel also, right?) so thats bearings and a new flywheel right there.

Yeah the wrx clutch fits very nicely on the turbo tranny. You don't need a wrx flywheel, but might as well upgrade to a lighter weight one :)
