ej20 Clutch

Post by snowjob »

Hi all, as you've probably read I'm in the process of doing an ej20t conversion into my turbo, I have a question though, I've pulled the enging from the tranny, and want to know:
1. How can I tell the condition of the clutch?
2. Is their a specific amount of clutch pad that I must look at?
3. What should I be checking before I bolt this thing back together.

Since I just won a wrx linkage on ebay, i'm pretty stoked to get this package all togeter.

Thanks for the imput.

Yay, more off topic! Might be smaller displacement, But much more power comes from it. there's nothing wrong with that.

You can pretty much tell jsut by looking. the clutch has grooves in it that should be pretty deep, if your entire clutch surface looks flat, or the grooves area really shallow, then it's worn. Do you know when it was last replaced, or if it ever has been? You should just replace it either way :)

clutch

Post by snowjob »

Well right now, it's kinda hard to tell how much is left, I'm guessing by your responce that I have to take the clutch apart, right now it's still bolted to the engine. I don't have the clutch centering tool, so I thought i'd ask for advice.
Smaller doesn't necesarily mean worse, At least when it comes to engines.... 8)

Ahh, still on the engine. Clutch alignment tool shouldn't be more than a few dollars, and all good clutch kits come with them. I'd replace it along w/ pressure plate, bearings etc.. if you don't know when the last time it was replaced is.

If you mount on the same tranny, it will be the same as the EJ22T clutch, or WRX clutch. since both of them are pull type.

clutch

Post by snowjob »

well i pulled it off tonight and well....the flywheel had some surface rust on it....indicating it hadnt' been runn in a while, the flyswheel it'self looks good, no grooves, but the cluch, well it's pretty chunky, their are some pretty large grooves in it, not the ones that are supposed to be their, i wish I could give some pix, but i don't have a host. It's chewed up pretty good, but all the other components seem to be pretty good, I've seen a WRX clutch on ebay for an ej20t engine for $199.00 is this a good price?? I'm thinking so...
Anyway any imput is apreciated...

I wouldn't ever trust a cheap clutch. But then again, I've been pampered for the past 500 miles from a really REALLY good clutch, so don't take my word for it.

I paid $719 for my clutch and flywheel kit. Worth every penny as far as I am concerned. The car pulls like MAD with a light flywheel :)

The WRX clutch is 3mm bigger than the Turbo Legacy clutch. I'd get a WRX clutch kit and a lightweight flyweel and you'll be set.

www.ninosautoaccessories.com was where I got my clutch from. Good guy to work with, I got the clutch in like 2 days.

First I'd like to thank Thawa for hosting..

Second, here are the pics, keep in mind my budget is modest. It's a Exedy clutch, and I realize the pressure plate/flywheel needs to be machined, but the clutch itself, what do you think...

Thanks for the imput.

Is that gunk buildup filling the gaps between the surface of the clutch? If it's not then the clutch is definitely worn down enough to warrant replacement. Even where it's not solid it looks too worn to put back in.

Clutch is toast, or not worth putting back in the car (since it'll have to come out in like 2 weeks because it's slipping).

Easier to just replace it all now than to have it fail later.

I spent $719 on my clutch and flywheel.

clutch

Post by snowjob »

Well a new clutch it is, I saw an Exedy on ebay for $199, I think I'll go with that, asuming the dealer isn't any cheaper.
Thanks everyone..

Will a dealer order you J-spec parts?

Snowjob - Watch out for E-Bay. $200 bucks, you've gotta make sure it's got all of the parts, and make sure it's new. I wouldn't buy a clutch off of e-bay, simply because there are to many variables involved that could reduce the life of the clutch. $200 bucks for a questionable one, or $350 for one directly from Exedy.

Which model is the clutch on e-bay?

I'd be curious about this stuff.....I'm looking for a clutch setup. Don't want to spend too much money right now, because I'll probably be replacing stuff later down the line if/when i work on the motor.

BTW, if you have a turbo legacy.....you'll want the clutch for the wrx.

Looks like they are both the same clutch. I say go for it, i would have if they were there when i needed one. You can also get the same kit from clutchcityonline.com for about 220 iirc if you're paranoid about ebay.

Yeah, they do look like they're both the Exedy stock-replacement clutch.

Quick question......I've got a guy on nasioc who has a stock wrx clutch he's willing to sell me. I asked him about how many miles it has on it....and such. He said to make him an offer......you think i should even bother doing this.....what should I offer him?

You DO want the flywheel. The Clutch is larger, and you'd need a larger flywheel.

The WRX clutch is like 3mm larger than stock T-Legacy.

I'm buying a lightweight wrx flywheel....

I actually had another guy pm me.....3000 miles on stock wrx clutch & flywheel & throw out bearing. $100 shipped. Going to do that.
