Rattle under the hood!!

Post by 88xt6joe »

Just got home and its dark so I cant see anything right now but I heard a rattle that sounds like it was coming from the front of the engine compartment on the passenger side. Any Idea what this might be?? I will inspect closely in the morning and tell you what I find.

Thanks, Joe

Heat shield maybe? My chimney rattles (I think it's the chimney anyways). Good thing it'll be gone soon.

Phil- I used to have a rattle in my chimney (when I had one) and it was a missing bolt. I replaced the bolt and it was golden. Have you checked yours?

88xt6joe- Belt shroud maybe? If you lost a bolt I could see it rattling.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say it's not the chimney :) In fact I'll guarantee it's not the chimney :D
But yeah, could be a belt cover, what did it sound like? metal, or plastic or a combonation? best to wait until morning to find out whereabouts it's coming from.

I've got a rattle under my hood too, but more of a squeeking sound, happens over bumps and sounds like it's coming from the front...

.... just thought I'd share that..

Hardy - I said he may have a heat shield rattling, then shared that I had my chimney rattling.

Matt - If all goes well, I won't have my Chimney for very much longer anyway, that'll absolutely get rid of any rattles it may have.

Well looking at in the light today and driving it around some more I think it is the chimney rattling because it sounds like it almost right in the passenger side fender.

Thanks for the help, Joe

Ok I guess I'm confussed too. I guess what I think is rattling is the thing inside the fender that hooks to the airbox. I though you where refering to that as the chimney. I guess I have no clue what the chimney is.

oh okay. The chimney is a metal heatshield that sits atop the turbo to direct air onto it while the car is moving and alllow hot air to escape while stationary.

The piece you're thinking of is the snorkus. Which is a relatively easy removal, remove the wheel, remove the fender guard, remove the airbox, and unbolt the two bolts. :)

That is good I will remove it when I change the fender out. I relized I would rather replace that fender than fix it.

Yes, but is that what is rattling? Could be, but I doubt it...

I've got a rattle too, at first I thought it was an exhaust leak of some sort - now I'm leaning towards either the chimney or perhaps something around the cat area. Under decent throttle / positive boost its very audible and sounds like a small spot weld rattling against what it used to be attached to. I've got to get under there and see if I can find it, maybe bend the offending piece out of the way or something.

If I'm holding the shifter when it's happening I can feel the rattle transmitted through the shift cables, too.

I'm just glad its not an exhaust leak.

Isn't all boost positive?

You don't have any shift cables in the SS. Hydraulic :)

well, technically yes... but negative boost also technically equates to vacuum so... ah crap OK so I didnt need to say positive.

And thats what I get for not actually having examined everything yet. Hey ya learn something every day!

No worries man, I've probably made more mistakes than everyone on this board combined. That's why I'm still around, learn TONS of new stuff, ALL of the time.

so wait... if we have hydraulic shifters, shouldnt the act of shifting feel different than a cable system? I could swear up and down it feels like I'm pulling cables. I'm gonna have to get under there and take a look-see. Any of those scanned manuals we have on the board show the hydraulic shifter assembly?

We don't have hydraulic shifters. We just have mechanical linkages.

oh lol thats right the transmission is pretty much right under the shifter. So we've just got levers and bolts, huh? I've got way too much play in my shifter, I bet a few of them bolts are loose.

Too much play probably means the bushings are worn or disintegrating.
