86 XT... What Engine is that?

Post by Bosco »

What Engine is in an 86 XT? Is it the EJ20T? I spotted one at the Junkyard today, and was wondering if it is worth looking twice at...
Are they a dime a dozen?

It is definitely a turbo'd 4 cylinder. I didn't think to look at the time, but I think the guages are electronic anyway, so I have no Idea of the mileage.

...Imagining an ej20t in my N/A wagon now... LOL  If Only I were a mechanic.....

Def. not an EJ20T. Its either the EA81 or 82, 1.8L Turbo.

86 would be a ea82t...I just picked one up (86 xt turbo) and its a nice car but there is definatly more power in the 2.2.

Anything in an XT 4cyl is an EA82, EA82T if it's turbo. The EJ20 has never been in any USDM Subaru except the WRX.

I am planning to pursue the strengths of an EA82T soon. Probably in an old Turbowagon or something. I am aware of them blowing headgaskets and cracking heads, it's a common problem. But I'm going to try anyway.

I always saw the XT6 driving around and saw the 'TURBO' logos on it and thought 'wow! H6 turbo, that must kick butt!' Then I learned it was just a 1.8l turbo. :p

You should get the 2.7 and figure out a way to turbo it. ;)
