Why do I like these lights so much?

Headlights to tailights and everything in between.

Why do I like these lights so much?

Post by Bosco »

Some people are bound to think this looks goofy, but I think I like it.
Maybe just because I think our lighting can use all the help it can get... Or maybe I think it looks badass.

What does anyone know about this setup? I know very little (nothing) about driving lights and fog lights...

Are the ones in the grill most likely driving lights and the lower ones fogs?
or...?
Would the driving lights be constantly on with the headlights?

I wonder what a setup like that would cost...

The lights could turn on whenever you wanted them to. Depends on your setup.

Yes; I believe those in the grill are driving lights -- auxiliary high beams, never on unless there's no traffic around and the high beams are already on. The ones in the bumper are fog lights, used in bad weather or when cornering at moderately low speed.

Bosco, you know your headlights in your 92s are actually pretty good, right? If you make sure the plastic is clean and not yellowed, and put in good bulbs with good wiring, they'll be close to as good as the lights on the car pictured, when you're using your low beams.

As far as I know, the grill-mounted driving lights were an option only in Europe. I agree with you; they look really cool and would be functionally useful. They'd be really expensive to get here, though... Maybe you could try to contact a used parts dealer in Europe somehow?

You could also try to do the same thing yourself. Get a spare grill, a pair of Hella FF75s or similar, and spend some quality time with your tools and some hardware. It might be a challenge to get them mounted rigidly enough, especially after cutting away part of the grill, but I'm sure it could be done.

Well, I suppose they might be... I RARELY get to drive my SS at night. My wife pretty much stole it from me as soon as we got it (which is why I just got a touring wagon). I do drive it whenever I get the chance, but this is rarely at night, and if so, it is usually in town.

My 92 NA wagon, unfortunately has been in a fender bender, and the front end was replaced with a 90-91 front end with yellowed crappy lights. I have cleaned them a few times, but they still suck, and I'm always driving that car at night on the back roads. I have tried turning on my brights so many times in that thing, just to find that they are already on. :?

That sounds like my kind of project.

What is the consensus on the fogs... PIAA is the answer I usually see when people ask what fogs they are using, but what model fits the best in there?

Are you sure those are a factory option? That's the only Legacy I've ever seen with lights in that position.

Well, I doubt it was a factory option. If anything it was probably a dealer-installed option.

I had seen two other cars with driving lights in the grill, but now that I think of it, they appear to both have the same owner (judging by the filenames of the images), and they don't seem to be the exact same lights and grill:

So maybe these are just custom jobs. Cool. Who's gonna be the first to do it in North America?

Looks like that David Carter fella from the "group hood buy" threads has something similar going on...
I don't like the way that particular set looks though :?

I knew a guy in Colorado that had a very similar setup on his '99 Impreza RS. I wasn't a huge fan of his setup, but that one doesn't look half bad.

They look like Hella lights (note the black square in the center of the light). It's not to likely that Hella would supply OEM driving lights for the Legacy.

It's pretty easy to tell that those aren't oem... they don't really fit the lines of the car.

Hella makes all kinds of OEM lighting, but it's usually European manufacturers who contract out to Hella. Subaru generally contracts lighting out to Koito.

Were the dealer-installed fogs on early 1990 models Hellas? I don't remember that...
