is it at all possible to change the gearing in the rear diff to say 4.11. or are there any aftermarket gears in the 5.73 range you can swap in. or can you take a n/a diff and rear axle and put it in.
i noticed that my na has a touch higher gear ratio and methinks that with a better ratio in the back i can get a much faster acceleration
acceleration curently are just a touch off even with my ss and the n/a

Kiss your center diff goodbye. You've gotta regear both ends or swap center diffs (to modify power split).

You'd have to pretty much change the tranny (at least the final drive ratio) in order to use 4.111 with AWD working. I do have to say I like the 4.111 gearing
gotta love keeping up fairly well with a stock turbo car

Yeah the 4.11 will keep up with the stock turbo's 3.90. Although on the freeway, the turbo car sits 500 rpms lower than the n/a at the same speed.

i know that there will be a difference in crusing rpm. but what do you mean by swap out both ends. and how would you go about it without changing the trans out?
i just thought if there was a different gear in the back it would turn to 60/40 instead of say 50/50

It appears that you are thinking about the front to rear power split, but thats not how it works.azn2nr wrote: i just thought if there was a different gear in the back it would turn to 60/40 instead of say 50/50
Having a different final drive in the rear would be asking your rear tires to turn at a different speed than your front tires-- all the while your entire car can only be traveling at one speed.
This will be fatal to your center differential. You'll have do the front and the rear to make it work.
There are 4.44 gears available, I believe.

Do a search on 4.11 gears. Ciper changed his turbo over to 4.11 gearing I believe. I remember reading about it a while back. He also talked about what was needed to make the swap.

then would, say , taking out the front axle make the car any slower than curently if both wheels are spinning at the same speed therefore making it possible to put a 4.11 or 4.44 in the back

Yeah it'd make it slower, real slow once the center diff goes kaput
. If you want a different gear ratio you need a different transmission and a different rear differential. Removing the front halfshafts will just make the center diff think the front wheels are slipping, and cause it to try to limit it, and effectively kill itself after x amount of time.

hmm, maybe that is all he did. I thought he had actually used it. Maybe it wasn't a turbo car and he just changed a LSD 3.9 to a 4.11 so he could use it.THAWA wrote:i thought he just converted a rear diff from 3.900 to 4.111 on his wagon.

if he did it why would a car being turbo make any difference?georryan wrote:hmm, maybe that is all he did. I thought he had actually used it.
