when I stop at a light or whatever then let off the brakes and slowly step on the gas I get a little moment of hesitation then a small small little clunk before the car starts moving. Seems like there is some play in the tranny somewhere. its an auto, any thoughts???

What happens if you go from driving slowly in reverse, stop, then to slowly forward and back again.....
Does the clunk happen each time you change direction? Does it feel/sound like it's coming from the rear of the car.
The front member of the rear subframe is known to do this if you're shiftin through the gears and on the power. However if the bushing's bad/loose. It may make the clunk.

well, start with the basics; if its in the rear, your diff needs to get looked at. Subaru rear diff failures are uncommon, from what i hear, so you should be ok, but check the play in your driveline. maybe your tranny mts need replacing? I've had this happen too, but it was the result of a broken LCA, which, you'd know was your problem.
When was the last time you serviced your 4eat? what 'bout the fluids?

Fluids are good. Service I have no idea. I found the car in a junk yard. I notice more of a time gap than an actual audible clunk sound. its not a bad clunk or anything. It just feels like there is alot of "slop" somewhere in there.
