For you picture lovers

Post by morgie »

I broke my transmission last friday (2nd gear dead).. and then had to completely take it apart to mix in some WRX parts.

can be sure i took a lot of pictures, wich can be found here :
http://public.fotki.com/morgie/morgie/o ... _explosee/

I confirm that the WRX output ratio is 1.1:1 in the transfer-case. (34/30 theet) compared to 1:1 in normal trannies (31/31 theet). I had to swap tranny cases because WRX case was not compatible with my OBS clutch type (clutch fork mounting different, hydraulic vs cable clutch)

so finally :
WRX Gearset
OBS tranny case
WRX Front Differential
WRX Transfer-case
WRX Viscous-coupling
OBS Transfer-case cover
OBS output shaft
OBS switches .

Awesome! The WRX case is flimsy anyway.

I'm gonna budget a big portion of my paycheck to a "get gears" fund so I can save for that fateful day when I know what's gonna happen :(.

Looking at it, it doesn't look that weak. I was hoping there would be an obvious way to strengthen it (like maybe a small alloy I-beam bolted underneath, for example.

I wish I'd had known you were doing this morgy, I would've had you take some more pics of the trans case, particularly the clutch fork area. Is the passenger side of the case the same on obs or wrx? meaning does it have that lil spot where the hyd fork pin is held on the cable setup?

I just took mine apart tonight, and it has the same second gear problem. The same thing just happened to Legacytuner with the tranny he just had put in earlier this year. Is this fairly common as a weak spot? The teeth on mine (formerly Legacytuner's) is completely stripped on half the gear. Is it just from hammering on the trans? Both times it happened to Legacytuner he was basically just cruising, at least that's what he says!

Anyway, everything else looks like brand new. It looks like I just need the two gears that mesh together for second gear, and what I believe is the syncro? It sits beside the bigger of the two gears, has cogs on it that mesh with the smaller gear, and is maybe 1/8" thick. I don't know too much about trannies. Do you think I could replace these three parts, throw it back together with some new gaskets, and call it good? I'll have to check on these parts, hopefully tomorrow. Any input is greatly appreciated.
