Smelly Sub!

Post by rb92leg »

Hey all!

I get a bad whiff which I only notice after shutting down my '92 Legacy (ej22t). Is this turbo related? How do I find out? It has 200k (km) on it and is stock all over from what I can tell. The seals leak a little and I had to replace the tranny coolant lines which were leaking too. I cleaned down the engine completely, but the smell lingers. I'm waiting to see where and when the next drip on my driveway appears next!

Thnx in advance.

wait, I just noticed that you say it's a '92 with an EJ22T. They never got the EJ22T in N.Z.. It should be the EJ20G shouldn't it or did you import an EJ22T or something?

Is it an oil smell or something else?

It's a burnt oil smell; definitely not rotten eggs!
BTW, The vehicle is a Jap import as are most used Sub's in NZ - there are no tariffs or duties imposed on imported second-hand Jap cars here.
Is a sub a sandwich, too?

Without any more information, I'd first guess that the valve cover gaskets are leaking a little. It's not uncommon for Subaru engines to develop leaks there, and the oil drips directly onto the exhaust where it burns.

Here we call sandwiches made on long pieces of bread submarine sandwiches, or subs. :)

Thanks vrg3; assuming this is a possible symptom, might this also be a contributing factor in the diesel-like sounding lifters? Maybe the carbonisation issue is related to leaky gaskets?? Just guessing.

The loud lifters probably have some air trapped in them, assuming they're the stock EJ20G heads.

If the lifters are loud, though, doesn't that mean they have air, and not oil in them?? That can't be a good thing, right? or will they just fill back up with oil again?

Right. It's not a good thing. The air does need to be bled out of them.
