Veeerryy high idle

Post by tris91ricer »

okay, well, i got the nerve to finally replace my alt by myself. Good choice, considering i had a spare and it made a huge difference, instantly.
After initial startup, everything was fine. in fact, it drove great.. no more battery lights and that 'brake' light over by the seatbelt indicator. (is that supposed to come on, btw?)
anyhow, on the drive home, it drove nicely. very good response. now, somewhere along the way, it decided that it wanted to get stuck at ~2000rpms, and go no lower. Normally, if i'm not giving it gas, it drops to Idle speed and sits as the car continues to roll, then comes back as I give it more gas.
Well, if i put it in park now, the idle is about 4300rpms. (Initially, before the drive home, it was okay at about 1100 or so.. just above 1.) This is wrong, i know. So.. can someone give me some ideas? I've checked the belts, the throttle cable is good.. i've disconnected the neg terminal for the night to see if the ECU can learn or whatever.. but I'm at a loss now; its late.
Any help, fellas?
Yes, I've searched, Jason, thanks. :D
Help me!

When my car idled high as a kite, it turned out to be my wiring.

I found that out after a new IAC ($400), a new throttle body, a new computer, and a new coil pack.

But it was my wiring afterall.

shit. A) that was quick phil, thanks!
B) fuckgoddamnit. i'm not buying a new IAC when it was fine before. i'm certainly not buying a new TB, either, and the coil pack is also fine.. this IS a wiring issue, but i don't understand where.. if the belt is too tight can it run high?

Too tight would put more drag on the engine, so no unless the IAC knew it and was overcompensating like an H2 driver.

4300 RPM?! Jeez. That's higher than I'd ever intentionally rev a cold engine!

If it's a wiring issue with the IAC valve, you'll most likely get a trouble code.

When you disconnected the battery, did you press the brake pedal for a while to help empty all the caps?

After resetting the ECU, did you let the car just sit and idle for a while? Was the idle steadily high, or was it loping?

I haven't re-connected it yet, and i didn't press the pedal, no. Its a little too early here to go out and try to see if it'll rev normal.. i'll have to wait until about 9-ish to do that.. Good thing i'm sick now, otherwise i'd be going into work in a few hours.. I'm so glad you're on the east coast, V, what would i do without you and that wonderful time difference? No, it doesn't lope like a failing alt, which is what i was hoping it might do..
to make matters worse, in the install, i broke off one of the bolts that holds the tensioner. (the T-Bolt that tensions the slide-dealie.. i snapped the one on the top, as it was bending.)
It still holds, and its okay for now, it just makes minor adjustments difficult until i can get that piece of bolt out and another one in.
I Did let it sit for a moment, but its so LOUD.. so i shut it off pretty quick.
I'll give it a start in a bit here and see what it's gonna do.

Hmm... After sitting for a while it might figure out how to idle properly.

Refresh my memory -- you're using the 1992 engine management? The complete 92 intake manifold (with IAC valve and injectors), the 92 MAF sensor, and the 92 ECU?

Please check the throttle cable under that cover, and see if it is returning back.

After I got my TW back from its tranny fix, there was a zip-tie lying there, and it was jamming the throttle release, causing high idle.

reset the ECU for shits and giggles once you verify all the connections are good.

well.. genius that tristan is.. NOT, i didn't check the throttle cable enough, as the nuts on that slider were all loose.. this seemed to help once i tightened it up.. so everything is fine now.. idles a little high ~1100, which is fine.. but it doesn't seem to wanna jump all the way back up where it was.. and there's definitly more power going around now.. everything works great. But thanks, Josh, i will be resetting the ECU when i get a chance.
Yeah, you guys all helped out alot... wow, i love it when a team comes together.

Now for my day's story:
I have asthma, to begin with. What started last night as shortness of breath and a nasty cough turned into a nastier cough and REALLY short of breath this morning, after a restless night of no sleep and almost no breathing. I've been out all morning getting poked, prodded, listened to, and now chest xrays. This shit sucks. They think i have fluid in my lungs, so i have to take the xrays back to my doc after they return from lunch, and see what the final verdict is. Meanwhile, i got refills on all my usual meds, and then some.
They're putting me on this nasty oral steroid, Prednisone.. I don't know if any of you have relatives, or you yourself have taken this shit, but it is NASTYYY.. the pills aren't coated, and they drag down my throat, leaving their white bitterness behind. Plus, it gives me mood swings, which don't help cause we're pretty sure I'm bipolar anyhow..
On the plus side, though, my lady called me scrawny, so these here steroids might help that, as the last time i was on them, i went thru an entire loaf of bread in one afternoon making toast.. gives me quite the appetite.
eh, now my chest hurts, my neck hurts from holding my head up, and i've got the all over bodyache going on. So the car can wait awhile.. it'll still be broke when i'm better.
Thanks again, guys, i'll keep you posted.
