Lack of interior...

Post by BAC5.2 »

Ok, I was installing some more audio equipment (XM Radio via XMDirect to my Pioneer headunit), and came to a realization.

We have ZERO room in the car to mount things.

The best I could have done, would have been to make a custom mounting box in the center of the dash above the radio, but that would have taken so long.

There was simply NO place to install anything under the dash. One of the boxes I needed to mount was about the size of a pack of cards, and the other about the size of a disposable camera. Nothin.

I ended up mounting them INSIDE the glove box, since I rarely use it for anything important. I can't actually remember the last time I had the glove box open.

The install went smoothly, and it fired right up as planned, but goddamn.

I had a LOT of room to play in my 95 Legacy L, and in past ripping aparts of the dash, I thought I had more room under here. But it turns out to be the opposite.

Hopefully I won't need to mount anything else under there.

We DO, however, have ample channels for routing wires and cables and such.

I don't understand it. The center bit, where the radio is, has so much room for improvement. An aftermarket headunit yields you a TON of room to store wires and shit like that, or make custom mounting for any number of things, like gauges or something.

We've got jack shit for room behind the glove box and the dash in general.

Oh well.

There's room up under the dash, you just need to get creative. ;)

I've got more wiring and crap under my dash it's ridiculous. I've got an alarm up there, and an RCA line driver behind the radio.

Yeah, you just kind of have to know where to find it. I'm sort of intimately familiar with everything having to do with the dash... since I had to take mine out

And I concur that there is plenty of room to run wires. I have the 2 gauge power cable along with all the monster cables to run all my speakers with seperate amps (those came with the car) and they have plenty of room to run everywhere, including under the rear seat frame.

Where abouts under the dash did you fit that stuff Josh? Behind the radio?

That's the only place I found lots of space.

I didn't even look behind the steering wheel and such.

Typically, behind the steering column, to the left of the steering column, and along the firewall behind said areas in most vehicles have more space than you'd think. Watching my installer (and helping him sometimes) has taught me this.

The line driver, relays, and wiring is behind the radio.

The alarm is jamed up in the back left corner near the firewall and clutch pedal.

There's shit loads of wiring run under the steering column, there's a shock sensor in there too.

I had my torque 2 chip mounted on the backside of the gray brace in this pic. There was actually a lot of room behind it.
