Anyone with CES crosspipe installed, please help

So I need some help from those of you that HAVE the CES crosspipe installed.

I was talking to John from MSR today, and I was thinking I had a leak from my crosspipe.

A little history, when i put it in I got a very loud fluttering/tapping/whistling sound when I was on boost. If my guage read vacuum, there was no noise, but the minute it would jump above 0 psi it would make noise and get louder as I got more on it. I it was not relative to speed.

I thought it might be gaskets, and changed them, well the noise was still there. After pulling it off the second time I noticed some discoloration:

The threads in this this shot are more silvery than the next one.

This next shot you can see some of the discoloration around that hole looking thing. It isn't a hole, it jus happens to be were the bands end.

The noise is really loud. It drowns out my turbo completely. Talking to John, he said that this was actually somewhat normal according to his experience and Trevor's. He said it should sound kinda like a vw or something like that.

Have you guys experienced something similar to this? Is this normal? Does that discoloration look like an exhaust leak to you? Any help would be nice. I don't want to have to send this back to the MSR guys and make them go through extra work if nothing is wrong with the pipe.

Hmmm... That picture really makes it look like there's a tiny hole in the flex joint. How else could the stainless steel braid get damaged right at one spot?

Did you show Jon the picture?

He's helping a friend move this week. He said if I posted pictures he'd look at them though.

I'm not really sure if it is a hole. It looks like it is the end of a thread and is just tucked there. As if the end was visable instead of being tucked under some other threads. You can notice, though, that it is really dark right there, and around it in a circle the threads are more copper than silver colored.

Hmm, I still haven't installed mine so I can't be of too much help but that doesn't look like an exhaust leak to me, it would be very black and sooty looking if it were.

It seems strange to me that the CP would change the sound of the exhaust that much. Besides it being a little larger diameter it's basicly the same isn't it? Does the OEM pipe have a flex joint too? From the look of the heat shield it looks like it does.

Are you reading the same boost levels as before the installation?

Did you notice any performance gains?

Hmm... It's hard to tell for sure, but maybe...

Why would a steel thread end in the middle of the braiding though? I don't think it would.

That coloring seems like the oxidation you'd expect if high temperature exhaust gas went by.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking, too.

I just want to make sure I'm not just being overly reactive to this thing. I've got someone who wants my stock crosspipe, but I put it back on the car and want to make sure I got a good one before I sell it.

I just went down and looked at mine and it does NOT have any disfigurement to the braiding of the flex joint whats so ever.

I missed your first post, Matt. I didn't notice any real gains, but I was also running my stock uppipe.

I really need to get an EGT and install them both.

I think, from what I understand, is that the wall lining is a different material (SS) and thinner than the stock CP. John said that Trevor said the sound should change, and that it would be similar to what I descriibed. I just wonder if it should be as loud as actually is.

Do you think you'd have time to put yours in sometime in the next week and test a run around to see how it sounds??

Ya it totally sucks! It's been parked for about the last 2 months, ever since the Shootout. I did drive her real quick the other day just to deglaze the rust that was forming off the rotors and get the oil and grease moving around a bit but it barely ran and blew an insane amount of smoke. Like really insane. lol

But in all seriousness, the increased noise is normal, bigger pipes do that (espically pipes with less restriction).

What get's me is the discoloration. Looks like there is a leak somewhere, but why?

Yeah, I expected a different noise, but I didn't expect what I got. I wish there was a way to let John hear it so he could tell me if it was the noise he is thinking it should sound like.

Hehe, if Matt does send it do you Phil, I'd be real interested in seeing what you hear.

I know there is some other guys on this board with this exhaust, did they only get the turbo back?

Maybe someone was overzealous when playing with the crosspipe's flex joint at some point.

Well, it came that way. I remember thinking that it looked kinda odd having that thing there, but shrugged it off as normal. If you were to see it in person you'd know what I mean.

Like I said though, I worked from 9:30 am to 10:30 pm yesterday. It was crazy too, we've been really busy and it's only going to get worse!

Phil- I asked Jen and she said it was her mom that took your call. She was watching my boy yesterday. Her mom told her but she forgot to tell me.

I get to work 5 am till 10:30 pm tomorrow! Aren't I lucky? Then I work a 12 the day after that.

I hate the bullet shifts. I work 9am to 9pm Friday. 8:30am to 9pm Saturday. 11am to 7pm Sunday. 9am to 9pm Monday. 9am to 9pm Tuesday.
