Headlights - 98 Legacy - Gumby question

Post by zachres »

An inexperieced question about removing my headlights:

Is there a retention clip of some sort holding the electrical plug in the bulb assembly?

My owners manual simply states that i should "detach the electrical connector from the bulb," but firm tugging doesn't seem to do the trick... I don't want to muscle it too hard and break it.

Is there a trick that I'm missing?

they are just stuck tight quite often...you need to pull pretty hard while rotating back and forth slightly, and it should come off. I had one stick so tight on a Honda that the bulb broke apart, no matter as I was replacing it anyway

There should be some kind of clip, yes, holding the connector to the bulb. There's a wedge-shaped detent on the 9007 bulb's base, and a clip on the connector fits over it. You'll need to pull that clip up with a screwdriver or your fingernail.

I see now that the '98 changed over to the 9007, Legacy only but not Impreza.

I also noted when searching that many complain that said locking clip busts off easily, so be careful
