Woot! K&N and a back-road test drive!

Post by Nomake Wan »

Well, I finally went out and bought myself a K&N drop-in filter, though it was somewhat hard to come by. I ended up getting the last 33-2232 at AutoZone, thank god. So I put it in, went for a test drive... experimented with the numbered gears on the AT...

Damn. That thing pulls hard when you keep it in that nice spot on the top of the Tach. Downshifting took a bit of left-foot braking so that the car didn't jerk violently... yep, I rev-matched on an automatic transmission. Heh.

And I bought replacement wheel covers for the ones I messed up (I didn't like those old anyway)... though now I have to go and get the darned thing re-aligned ever since my snow incident. It doesn't drive the way it used to, the maneuvering is wrong. I'm sure it's an alignment thing. Just means that I have to spend my remaining money on alignment instead of the strut tower bar I wanted.. bah...

And I learned yet another valuable lesson on this particular test drive: shifting from 2nd to neutral without touching the throttle is a no-no. I was going downhill, stuck behind slow cars, so I figured I'd just coast... shifted to N and it felt okay... but all my warning lights came on, which surprised me since it's never done that before. I stalled the Automatic. Wow. So I started it back up again and kept going.

All in all, it was a good day. Learned some cool things about my car, got a new K&N, and can't wait for the temperature to rise so I can do a snorkusectomy.

Stupid electric autos. I used to throw my '84 in neutral to coast all the time. I also maually shifted it constantly.

you should try not to drive in neutral for many reasons, but it sounds like there's something wrong with your car to cause it to die when stopping.

It didn't die when stopping. It died when I was going about 30-something MPH in second gear (so I was at about 5000RPM? Maybe?) and dropped it into neutral. So it dropped from high-RPM to no load whatsoever, so when it did the dip it normally does, it dipped too low and stalled.

Normally when I'm in Drive and shift to Neutral this does not happen.

Haven't checked the ECU, but the POWER light flashed when I first restarted the car and stopped flashing when I turned the Manual switch off. I'll check for codes tomorrow.

Something tcu related then. Did it reflash again when you restarted it a second time? It probably stoppe flashing when you turned off the manual switch by coincidence.

When I started the car later in the night, I didn't notice any flashing lights... but that doesn't mean that it couldn't have flashed. I just didn't notice anything.

I'm going to sleep for now... more after I wake up and get to work.

it could've just been a single code thrown from the engine dieing.

If it is an isolated incident, there is really nothing to worry about. I think he had it right, the revs just dropped to fast and it didn't compensate quick enough. If it happens again, then you start looking for stuff. Otherwise, you will just fix it until it is broke. How many people have bought IAC valves on this board?...
