She dun spun somethin
Either a bearing or a rod or whichever you can spin. I was doing donuts in a local gravel pit. When I began to smell a really bad burning smell. I decided to stop and go home. On the way there I heard a real loud knocking sound. I mean loud. So its something internal. At first I thought it was just rocks that were trapped in the heatshield but you can totally hear this in the engine area. At least I have that other engine I can throw in there.

I heard something really gross sounding from the front of a STi v4 engine that we thought was a bearing or something else terminal, and it turned out to be the water pump.
We used a big screwdriver held up to our ear to isolate the noise.

good idea. Just tried it and the scraping noise I've been hearing for about a year is the ps pump. As far as the knocking, I can't pinpoint it. I heard it knocking when I would have the object on the #2 intake runner, but when I would go to the exhaust manifolds I couldnt hear anything knocking wise. I didnt really hear anything in the heads/valve cover area. I've also got some valve noise so I can't really isolate anything. Shit maybe the AC compressor finally took the big shitter, it's be really noisey here lately. I'll look tomorrow duiring the day.

For anyone who doesnt know, thats the trick. I use a long screwdriver, press it up againtst my ear, and probe around all over the motor. Kinda fun actually.mikec wrote:

Hope its not a rod. The downside to the horizontally opposed motor.

More testing and listening today. There is a loss of power when driving, no CEL though. It doesn't feel like it's running on three cylinders but definately less power. I went around the block twice. By the time I got home the second time it was a real loud new sound, almost sounds like detonation/pinging. That I guess is possible since the gas in it is about 3-4 weeks old and was sitting around half a tank for two weeks or so. I'm going to switch to 89 or 91 for a few tanks, and do a compression test tomorrow. I can't describe the sound. It's like a deep metallic knock. The valve noise has gotten much louder though. It sounds like a diesel. I made a vid but this silly camera only works with a firewire cable
.
To recap it seems to be making three noises now. The valve tapping noise, always had that just not this loud. The metallic knock sound I just picked up last night that I can't pinpoint. And this new sound. No vid of that though. My perception of the sound is like a clanking/sort of metal sound higher pitched with a puff or wheeze to it.

Our cars run really well on 3 cylinders. I remember riding around in Matt's car when the #4 cylinder was pretty much gone, and it was pretty smooth. I was shocked when the compression test showed very low compression on one cylinder.

Ya, I was going to say that our cars are extremely smooth even when down a cylinder. Heelhooker's car ran real smooth on only 3 too and IIRC he actually had 0 compression on #4.vrg3 wrote:Our cars run really well on 3 cylinders. Do the compression test. I have my fingers crossed for you....

Just an update.
It's cylinder #3 making the noise. I took the spark plug out of the #3 cylinder to have a peek at it. It looks fine. To verify, I looked at cyl #1 and it looks the same. It doesn't look fouled, or oil soaked, or caked with burnt coolant or anything. I dunno what to think now. I still have yet to do a compression test or anything, or even change the oil. But just based on this observation I have no clue what's going on in there.

With the listening tool. When I put it on the block right above #3 it was real loud in my ear.

I'm thinking it's more a rod bearing than foreign material. That would have most likely caused something to break or bend right? And it probably wouldnt be around now anyway.

So there's no metal in the oil, and theres now a squeek/chirp/loud high pitched noise. I really need to get this thing taken care of.

Well, if a foreign object makes it into the cylinder volume, it could end up staying for a while since valve openings have a weird shape that works okay for gases but not so well for actual solid things.
But, yeah, it would have probably bent or broken something.
Did you save the oil? Maybe an oil analysis would be interesting to read.

Well, I do know they check for a bunch of different metal compounds, and they can correlate them to typical amounts seen and to what parts of the engine they came off of. So maybe you could determine from, say, the yellow metal content that you very likely have a worn bearing. I dunno.
