Engine Stand & Hoist

Post by Legacy777 »

Anyone have suggestions on an engine stand & hoist.

I was looking at the hoists at harbor freight, and they didn't look too bad, and looked pretty solid for $200.

Pep Boys actually had a decent one for around 100$, its pretty good quality, I used it to pull the motor from my SS.

When I lived in CO I used the rafters of my apartments garage for a hoist.

Down here I built what I call "the gallows". Basically built out of 4x4 posts that are very well braced. When it's not pulling engines I attach my kids swings to it.

Works great. I pulled a 350 with a 700R4 attached to it.

how often would you use the hoist? maybe rent one and just buy a stand. Hoists take up a shitload of space. I cant speak for the engine hoist, but I have Harbor freight's 2.5 ton floor jack, and I like it a lot. strong ram, plenty of height, very stable. they have pretty good prices even if some of the stuff isnt too quality.
Have you heard of Grizzly? it is a mail order type tool supplier, Im almost positive that they have a hoist. Sears might be another option, Im sure craftsman makes a hoist. might be $$$ though.

I bought a nice folding lift and engine stand from Fleet Farm about a year ago. The lift was $150 and the stand was about $50. I think they were on sale. My garage has a dirt floor, and is full of "junk" so I have to keep it in a storage shed in my back yard, where all my project cars are. It's a PITA to move it around outside, but I use it all the time in the summer. I use it instead of a jack when I need something up higher than changing tires!

I've used the harbor freight version many-a time. works well, heavy as a bitch, but moves around easily enough.

I got a stand/hoist combo deal from Ebay. The hoist folds up pretty compact.
