Octane

Post by J-MoNeY »

Here in Colorado our standard is 85 for regular, 87 for mid, and 91 for prem. I heard that you folks on the east coast have 87 as the base standard. I wonder why they have it this way? :?

Part of it is that at higher altitudes you can get away with lower octanes since the tendency to knock is less.

How is that? I would assume that since altitude is present our boost is slightly higher then yours at sea level or around there. Does that make sense?

Yeah. I still don't put 85.5 in my car when I'm driving through Utah and Idaho, though. I tend to only see it in small towns in the middle of nowhere.

It's not the boost as much as it is the air pressure, because not all cars are boosted. If I understand it right your 8:1 is less air pressure than our 8:1 at sea level. Sort of like us compressing 100 lbs of air to you compressing 90 lbs of air. Is that an accurate example or am I off base?

thats correct. on a NA engine, only so much of the atmosphere is sucked in on each intake stroke. since the atmosphere is less dense at higher altitude, less cylinder pressure is the result. octane rating refers to the resistance to detonation right? so with less cylinder pressure you are less prone to detonation, hence the lower octanes available.

We used to have 86 at Sunoco, but now the min is 87 and the max 94 (I think only at Sunoco again).

I hear it is going up 24 cents a gallon for now and possible higher. The min here in FL is 87 then up to 89 then to 92.

There is a place not far from here that sells 102 race fuel.

Yea, we can get 100, 110, and 116 octane here. 100 octane is unleaded :) I ran it on the dyno. That was a fun tank of gas.

Ya, we have Ultra 94 here at Sunoco's but I have a station down the road that sells 116 Cam 2 race fuel. Only catch is that you have to put it in a gas can, they won't let you just fill up.

Down at Beaver Springs, local drag strip where the F&S and Shootout take place, they sell 104, 108 (both unleaded) 110, 112, 116 (leaded). They also sell naaaaawwss.

I don't think it would hurt persay, but at the price of around $6.00 a gallon, I wouldn't be running any thought anytime soon.

I wonder what would happen if I ran half a tank of redline fuel treatment and the other half is seafoam.....You would be able to drink out of that engine...

Does anyone else with an NA run 89 (or whatever your mid grade is)?
Just wondering if I'm alone in my not-totally-necessary fuel habit.
