Weird thing happened while idling *NEW INFO! UPDATE*

Post by corsair »

I was sitting in front of a friends house idling for maybe 7 minutes last night and all of a sudden the engine stopped and then restarted on it's own again. It's never done this before that I know of, especially because it restarted on it's own and if it did that while I left it unattended I wouldn't have noticed. Any idea why this would happen?

Phil, how the heck did you do that? I was sitting there, I figure I would have heard your car around... Maybe that's why I saw the cop shortly afterwords... weird

Phil and I were joking, I was just sitting in the drivers seat of my car listening to a cd when all of a sudden the engine stopped and then restarted again, of it's own accord. It was at a low idle but that was it.

Did it completely stall out? These engines can withstand a very low idle. It's amazing how many times I thought I stalled it due to hesitation problems, but putting the clutch back in would bring it back to life.

I heard the starter spin and the revs popped up to like 2k or something and then settled back to the idle.

Yeah, maybe it's spooks. Usually they play with faucets, cleaners, lights, and outlets, but then I'm only familiar with haunted houses, not cars.

Uhh...

Do you have some kind of remote starter mounted under the dash?

no remote starter, heck the only mod that has ever been done to this car was the replacement of the stock subaru head unit with this damn JVC one that is way too bright for night driving (thank god for the pull out cup holder)

maybe it is posessed or angry because I wanted to replace it with a turbo or even a newer impreza or legacy recentyl, but every time that happens my parents remind me that I'm going to college in a little over a year so whatever I buy will just sit around for a year, but thats a different story

oil, having too much or too little wouldn't cause it right?

The only remote possibility I can think of is something with the ignition switch. It seems like it'd be a really remote chance that it would open the ignition circuit, then close the starter circuit, and then close the ignition circuit again though.

ok, ghosts or radiator fans or relays....

I was idling again for a while today on 2 seperate occasions and I noticed my temp gauge was really high when I resumed driving, this was quickly remided by 50 mph winds through the radiator....

I think my 2nd temperature sensative radiator fan isn't going on, I let it idle with the hood open and it ran cold, and the 2nd fan never had much reason to go on. I guess we'll see what happens...

LH Radiator fan running- check
coolant level- check
fuses- check
weirdness- double check

re-reading this thread, can't you wire the JVC head unit so that the illumination is controlled by your dash light dimmer ? Usually that option is available on head units, but perhaps not all. You may just need to switch one wire.

If you have a multimeter, probe the power supply wires from the car for variable voltage, when you turn the dimmer for dash lights. One of the guys on here probably knows the colors for the constant 12V power, versus the dimmed 12V for the radio lights

you're probably right but I haven't tried, my Mother bought the head unit (before the car became mine) from circuit city and it came with free installation so we just let them do it... probably a good idea to try that
