I have a "fup, fup, fup, fup" sound coming out of the 1,3 head via the exhaust. It could be a leaking seal, or it could be a shot exhaust valve.
any ideas? Thanks.
I am going to check compression this weekend.
I don't seem to have any noticable lack of power. And when I bought the wagon it had a burnt valve and I really don't remember this sound.
can you hear a burnt exhaust valve?

Mine sounded completely fine until the cylinder died completely. When it died it did make a sound sort of like you described but kind of like a really weird misfiring. Mostly I heard it from the exhaust off the guardrail. It lasted only a minute or two at 85 before the car started to lose power like it was running badly retarded timing and got progressively rougher. You might want to do a leak down test and see if you can hear a leak in the exhaust.
