Insurance don't know Sport - charges Legacy L rates
Hey all,
I just added the new turbo to my insurance policy. The VIN comes up as a Legacy L!!! Seriously, I am so stupid and honest that I actually called in and tried to convince them that my car was a turbo. We verified the VIN. We tried to change it manually, but they couldn't change it in the computer becaues the only options for a 91 Legacy are "L" or "LS"
OK, here is some data (that most people would never have!!!) and it shows you what we are getting away with here:
Liability on my Impreza RS: $278.90
Liability on my Legacy L: $139.50
Liability on my Legacy Turbo: $139.50
If you think about it, liability just measure how "reckless" the car is - it doesn't matter how old it is or expensive. So, the Legacy Turbo should be rated just as reckless as an Impreza RS, probably more so. But we are getting away with HALF the liability cost just because it's not on insurance company's radar.
Talk about a sleeper!

I will be paying less to insure my motorcycle, than I will to insure the SS (Liability only).
Kinda odd. I've got a clean record and everything, and a bike costs less to insure than a car.

Yeah, for those who do have it show up as a SS, I wonder if your rate is higher than the L - or if it's still the same just because the insurance company doesn't have enough data to make a special rule for it.
Well, in case it helps any of you find a better rate, the company where I found this loophole is G31C0.

Full coverage on the bike is three times what full coverage on the Legacy is.azn2nr wrote:because they wont be paying much for damages on the bike if you wreck it. 8k at most for a bike and thats if you live.

I'm guessing liability is less on the bike because even though there are good chances that you will get killed, the bike weighs a lot less than a car, so it's much less likely that you will bring somebody else down with you. Less chances of doing damage to OTHER people = less liability.
Make sense?

Believe it or not, NONE of my three vehicles are listed exactly as they are.
(I have State Farm, BTW.)
The first car I bought (of the three Subarus I have now) was the 99 2.5RS and when I bought it, she is like "What's a 2.5RS, I don't see that here is it a coupe?", so it is listed as an Impreza 2-dr instead (as 2-door coupe, 4-door sedan and wagon were the only listed options). With the RX sedan, there was no RX anywhere in the list and entering it manually made it ask for original list price, etc. (so we chose the GL sedan instead as "close enough" (in retrospect the GL-10 might be more accurate, but it is only liability after all)), but then when she entered the VIN number into a later field, it correctly identified it there as a Subaru RX 4WD Turbo.
I wasn't sure about the Legacy, so I just checked online and it is listed as Legacy 4-dr (and I know I mentioned Turbo and/or Sport when I insured it). Oh well. They have the actual VIN numbers for each vehicle and their system apparently doesn't list all the models that are available, so its their own fault if this issue ever comes up later.

But the odds favor you going down, so rates are generally higher. Fuck other people, your insurance company is going to have to pay for your ass in the hospital. And if you haven't seen motorcycle crashes, they can put you in the hospital for a long time.rallysam wrote:I'm guessing liability is less on the bike because even though there are good chances that you will get killed, the bike weighs a lot less than a car, so it's much less likely that you will bring somebody else down with you. Right, the total rate is higher because they have pay for your broken ass in the hospital. The liability part of the rate however is just dependant on what damage you can do to others, which will be less for a bike than a car, so just the liability part will be cheaper for the bike than for a car.

My 91 SS also came up as an "L" on the policy, I didnt complain. It makes sense that an RS costs way more to insure, it "looks" fast, so its gonna attract all sorts of crazy drivers.
