Question on engine swap! Pls Help!

Post by Sh0ck3d »

UPDATE: The intake manifold is actually different and would not bolt on to the old engine after really looking. It appears that I would HAVE to use both intake and exhaust manifold from the new engine and have to do some rewiring... Any help is STILL MUCH APPREICATED! Thank you all!

----
I am trying to swap a 1998 EJ22 (very low miles) non-turbo into a 1990 AWD Legacy wagon non-turbo...

I really just need to know what needs to be done to have this much newer engine function in my older Legacy wagon... Im not a pro and not everything is bolting up as I see it!

There appears to be the following differences:

1. Exhaust manifold is different. Old motor is 3 bolts, 2 pipes; the new one is 2 bolts, 1 pipe. Can I just buy the newer 2 bolt 1 pipe manifold and everything is good?
2. Intake manifold appears to be different. Can I swap the old intake manifold from the 90 on to this and have it work properly?
3. Head is VERY different... Any problems here? It appears I will need a new set of sparkplug wires...

Anyone have advice on what needs to be done to have this swap work properly? I already bought a new timing belt, water pump, and thermostat just in case... ANY help or advice is appreciated greatly! THANKS!

What's wrong with the old engine? If you can just use the new short block and swap over the heads and msnifolds from the old engine it would be your easiest bet, but if you use the new heads and manifolds, I imagine as long as you reuse the older sensors you should be fine as far as wiring, but I'm guessing on that. As for the exhaust, you could get a newer one and figure a way to attach it to the old system or get a whole new system to match.

Overheated...

Post by Sh0ck3d »

Old engine only had 105,000 miles but the thermo went bad, and then the water pump failed @ about 75 mph on the freeway. Long story short, the thing has a cracked head, probably warped block. Got VERY VERY hot and I decided to buy a newer motor with low miles (32,000 on new motor).

I am really just trying to figure out what I need to buy to get this newer 98 motor to work in my 90 wagon! So far I just have the long block w/ manifolds.

Few questions for you.

Did you take the old heads off and see the cracked head and warped block? I could see that being something someone would tell you just to prepare you for what could happen. I'm sure it has happened to someone somewhere, but unless you actually saw this, I wouldn't believe it. You're much more likely to blow a headgasket than do either of those with an EJ.

What all did you get with the newer engine?

I got long block w/ head, intake manifold, exhaust manifold. No accys with it or anything.

The old EJ22 definetly at least cracked a head. I heard it was even common on the older Subarus... Replaced thermostat, timing belt, water pump, etc. HG was still ok. It would start up but would nearly immediately overheat if driven. Really I am interested in installing this new motor though. VERY low miles and I plan on keeping this baby for a long time! I love these cars!

What sensors did you get with the engine? You could use the single port exhaust if you either get a aftermarket catback or just get a custom catback made. What's wrong with using the intake manifold that's on the engine currently?

Did you actually see the crack though? EA engines are known to crack heads, EJ engines aren't so known for it. It's pretty wierd that you cracked a head before you damaged the headgasket. I'm not trying to sway you away from installing the new engine, but I'm just saying, cracking a head isn't that common with an EJ.

This is going to be a pretty straightforward swap. Don't bother with trying to mess around with switching heads or blocks or that other BS that has been suggested. Use the new longblock complete, intake manifold and all.

What you will need to do is switch the intake manifold wiring harness from your '90 over to the new engine. This is generally easiest if you remove the intake manifolds off of both engines, but can be done with the manifold installed. Almost every sensor and signal is the same. The two that are an issue are the IAC and the EGR. Did you get a partial manifold harness with the longblock? You will need to splice in a couple of connectors onto your old harness to make it plug up to the sensors on the new engine...
