Fuel Leak

Post by QuickDrive »

Alright, so I smelled fuel for a week or so, just figure I'm running extra rich. but then I noticed it's unburned fuel. So I take a knee on the drivers side and see that the lines there are dripping quite a bit.

Now this is just a preliminary post, I'm not sure, and have never dealt with fuel leaks, but does anyone have any insight on what might be going on? where the leak may be coming from and what I can do to fix it.

I've got a few pics on where I think the leak is coming from...

Spoke with subaru, and if it's one of the places, the tanks gotta come out, which means the rear diff, and the exhaust has gotta come out which is impossible since my exhaust is one piece now..

I'm going to watch this thread because I've had a leak for quite some time now. Coupled with the ever growing diesel sound of my engine I'm getting bummed.

I'm guessing you mean the rear driver's side?

Yes.

Now after I had someone looked at it, it's leaking twice as much.

Probably going through 10L of fuel per 40km's of driving... Too early in the morning to convert that.

Where exactly in the rear driver's side is it leaking?

The only thing over there that is coupled is where the tank & body fuel lines come together. You should be able to shine a flashlight up there and see if taht's where it's coming from.

From that point on, the body fuel lines are routed inside the vehicle. If it's not leaking there, you either have a tank leak, or one of the metal tank lines has a leak.

ah remember not to try welding the tank. Accidents happen that way :P It's probably a loose hose.

No, not all the time, only for about 30 minutes after driving, and while driving of course.

Crap,

It's one of the 3 metal sending lines that run over the tank and down the side of it...

There's a plastic mounting piece that holds the lines to the side of the tank and that's where it's coming from.

Unfortunately there's no other option but to replace that piece, which means dropping the rear diff,, and exhaust, then the tank itself.

The 14 years of rust are going to make everything there quite brittle, and I'm looking at more parts to replace for reassembly I'm sure.

I'm at a loss. After I get an estimate (unfortunately I trust no one but subaru themselves to do this work) I'll figure out what to do.

Yeah unfortunately dropping the tank is a bit of work, just because you have to take everything else out.

I will say....a good mechanic should be able to do this in a day. You're probably looking at, at least 5 hours of labor....if not more.

Done. 35 minutes and the leak is repaired.

I bypassed the hard send line that was leaking with a 5ft piece of Pressurized fuel hose.

left the original one right where it lay.

40$ for the hose.

Done deal.
