Help, not sure what the hell is leaking

Post by Bane »

Seems i made a mistake in my early check of the leak.

It's not coming from the hose that is clearly the A/C line. It's actually coming from the one directly below it.

Instead of coming out of the first smaller rad and clearly going into the condensor, it appears to be coming from the main rad and goes to the block. After leaving the rad this line immediately drops down beneath the car (hugging the chassis wall by the drivers wheel, almost like it's to keep it out of the way) with another rubber hose, and after only 6" of tubing underneath the frame, it comes right back up and goes to the back of the engine.

It's a stupid little pinprick of a hole and it's spraying a brownish fine mist everywhere.

I'm nervous that this isn't A/C stuff and is something more important like... Tranny fluid. I can't really say it's reddish in colour, nor can i see a noticeable difference in the level on the dipstick, but I've yet to check that again.

Other then coolant, what else runs through the main rad? Coolant should be green, right?

Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

If its on a metal nipple on the radiator than its your transmission cooler.

yep, that's what i thought... it looks like it's right at the edge of the nipple inside the hose where it's starting to come open on.

Funny, i was going to go to get the tranny and diff fluids changed. That would have been a waste if i had actually put in the Royal Purple as i had been contemplating.

Thanks!

Any tips on getting this serviced? I mean is it just a standard hose? or is this a specialty part that needs to be serviced or at least purchased from subaru directly?

And if something like this happens, without anything being done by myself directly, are there any other hoses that I should probably look at getting replaced as well?

Can i just wrap this in some sort of sealant or plumbers tape, so that i can drive it over to the mechanics up the street? or does it really need to be towed?

ATF leak for sure, power steering stuff is all on the other side so it has to be tranny fluid. Judgeing by the color you need to change the trans fluids asap anyway. Are you sure the level isnt lowering? You checking it when the AT is fully warmed up? I had trouble with the AT hoses seaping on my 1997 OB tightening clamps no longer worked. I replaced the rubber hoses. Oem hoses and filter kit would have been cake to install (http://www.subaruparts.com/cart/?pn=31099aa090) but for a quick sale I used fuel grade hose 1/2 inch not the best fitting I will attest. Get new clamps too. Messy job! Get some degreaser for when the job is done to clean it all up. Also, so you can tell if the job is done right. If the radiator AT cooling line port that is metal is leaking you have a few options: a radiator shop may be able to fix it, of course it is easy to just get a new radiator $$ you could probably epoxy it if it is absolutely clean. Or buy an new external oil cooler and run new lines to it. These usually mount to the front of the car which consider air flow needing to go throught this then the a/c condensor and the radiator!

Lol, considering most of my mod experience is nuts bolts and screws, it was simple, but i feel pretty proud of myself... and yes, it was disgustingly dirty.

ended up getting some 3/8" hose, a brass connector and some clamps... thing is better then new!

the part that had me most concerned was the missing fluid... how much, what kind etc..

ended up putting about 4L back in, and then had a fluid shop double check it for me...

with my luck, i'll be looking at a 5mt swap. lol
