Red Bull human powered dragster race: Detroit Sept. 10

Post by professor »

I have unofficially begun helping a team design and construct a vehicle for this race to be held in Detroit in Sept.

Basically you build something to do 1/8 mile with entirely human power, up to 5 people. 50 points for speed, 50 points for "originality"

If you are in the area, come on out. These things are a lot of fun, and lots of free Red Bull to get all hopped up on.

We are contemplating a 2-stage vehicle that should be capable of launching a single person across the finish line at 50-60 mph. Look for the "Deep Impact" team. We have folks on the team who built the real Deep Impact craft.

At the club where I work we have a drink called the Jagerbomb. It's a glass of redbull with a shot of Jagermeister in the middle. You pretty much pound it and it is a wicked rush.

Make that your NOS....

Prof - you may want to check out the bicycle show at the Brookline Museum of Transportation (MOT.org) they have going on sometime this August. They usually have some odd ball ideas and some MIT HPV engineers show up. Not much in the way of HPV specifically, but it might be worth a trip for inspiration at least and there will definitely be people who will be interested in this project.

thanks evolutionmovement, I will check it out. I also have a set of carbon disk wheels on the way, for my own recumbent bike project, so that show sounds pretty good

There should be planty of recumbent bikes there. I've seen one that was a 5-person. There was also a rear-steer bicycle (ridden backwards looking through mirrors) by the inventor who was in his nineties. Of course they have plenty of 'safety' bikes with their high-wheelers and velocipedes.
