Am I ruining my tranny?

Post by entirelyturbo »

Okay, most of my Legacy's shifter is out... most:oops:. The last bracket that attaches to the linkage before it goes into the tranny is still there. I tried Dremeling that bolt out, but it was in a very awkward position and I spent about 30min a day for 3 days and only drilled it about halfway. So I tried hammering that stupid pin out. The inner pin came out relatively easy, but the outer one was REALLY in there and the took me another day...

Now my question: I got both pins out, so the only thing holding that little linkage piece on is corrosion. I stuck a tie-rod fork against it, and using a bolt on the tranny casing as a fulcrum for the lever, creamed the hell out of it for 15 minutes. It didn't budge an inch...

By hitting it this direction, I'm basically slamming it into a gear it's already in (it's either in 2nd or 4th right now, I can't tell). Am I risking damage to my tranny?

I think there is actually a stopper that also holds the rod in place along with the shifter fork, so not all the force is pounding on the fork. If it's that stuck it might be time for torches, you might wreak the shifter rod seal doing this so be prepared to replace it just incase. I hate it when they don't come off. Have you been spraying it with penatrating lube?

Immersing it in penetrant is more like it. Well, I absolutely dunked it in rust penetrant and WD40, and then let it sit. I haven't had a chance to mess with it again since, thanks to my XT deciding to beg me for a window regulator ...

I'll try giving in another squirt tonight and I might bang on it some more...

I still am concerned, though, that I am hurting the tranny by slamming it into gear like that...
