The Shootout is over but the memories are forever! *w/pics*

The preparty was kind of a bust, the only people that showed were ones that I had setup pretty much. :( Vikash, Sam (corsair) and I were talking to Matt (shik) most of the time and while we were, everyone ate all the food. So we left hungry to boot.

We saw the new '06 WRX wagon and '06 sti. All I can say is the new front end looks waaaay better in person and I fell in love with the '06 wrx wagon. It has the 2.5 power plant now with the VVT and a bumped up 230 hp and 235 trq. It also comes stock with some pretty nice 17"s, vented rear brakes and Subaru 4 pots up front! The new seats are uber pimp. Very comfy and the colors are more neutral, which is nice. I love the car.

On the way back after the preparty we were racing against some of my friends with WRXs. I pulled on an '04 wrx sedan w/4eat (light mods) and we ran it from 55 mph up to about 125 mph. Pretty fun. My buddy Dan and I went at it next, '02 WRX sedan w/5mt (light mods) and I could pull on him until about 5300 rpm and then he'd catch and then pull away from me. It was very obvious that our SOHC heads hurt us.

We went back to my house about 9:30 pm and shortly after Phil showed up. Let the wrenching begin! We installed a WRX TMIC on my car which was a bit of a bitch. We worked on it until 3:30 am, went to bed at 4 am, got back up at 7:30 am, finished the install at 10 am and hauled ass for the shootout (I didn't get a chance to pull my cat either but oh well). We didn't get very far before I blew an i/c hose, so we stopped to pick up a new one at the parts store and I limped, off boost, down to BSD.

I was also having idle issues and stumbling stalling issues. :(

They almost cancelled the Shootout because of low turn out before we even got there but luckily a guy from Ohio showed up and threw a fit, so they went ahead with the show. More people showed up about the time we did and we had about 15-20 cars. Very low turn out but this year was kind of a bust anyways with next year being the HUGE event. Thankfully they let everyone run for free though, so that was super cool.

Once there I burned the shit out of my finger trying to fix my car. Had to wait a bit longer for it to cool down and then finally got it fixed. I got the gnarliest fuckin blister you ever saw. It was nasty.

During this time Vikash dropped his mid-pipe and so he was running straight off the DP. Holy shit it was loud! He was running launch control and the backfires were echoing of the surrounding hills, it was great. :D

Phil ran out and put down a 15.19 @ 10 psi straight away but unfortunately that was the best time put down by a SS all day. I was running 15.3's @ 16 psi and not understanding why. Vikash was putting down mid 15's @ 16 psi too. Hmmm. WTF?

I got to drive Vikash car while he monitored his reading and without launch control I put down a 15.3 but that was as good as I could get. His car was sooooo fun to drive though. It rumbled. It really felt as if you were driving a race car and it was wicked loud. He also had the sick ass AWIC setup with an entire igloo cooler full of ice water! It was sick.

Phil drove V's car a bit too with L-C but I think his best was about the same as me IIRC.

Phil upped his boost to go for the gusto but fuel cut plagued him and his 16 psi runs were much slower then his 10 psi runs. Arghhh.

Fastest car was an STI from Ohio. He ran an 11.14 @ like 139 mph! Phil from Element Tuning was there too and put down a best of like 11.7.

Sam (rallysam) showed up right as things wrapped up so unfortunately he didn't get to run but he came with us back up to the "port" for Mongolian bbq. Vikash and I ate so much Sushi, mmmmm, damn good. Sam decided to stay the night which was waay cool because it gave us a chance to get to know him and he's a really cool guy. We pretty much just hung out and bullshitted Saturday night and ended the night with a Rally Mexico viewing.

We woke up Sunday and licked our wounds (me literally) for a while and then finally went off to Dennys for breakfast. It took for ever because of the Little League-ers. Went back to my place and we did a bit more wrenching. Fixed my idling and stumbling issues and installed my new drivers seat. Phil tried out runnign without power steering but that didn't work out too well. He did replace his alt-ps belt.

We had a short intermission while Vikash tried to hammer out some cell phone issues and we bid Sam a sad fairwell as he had to head back to Baltimore.

Phil, V and I then went for the most badass backroads cruise EV3r!!1! We had soooo much fun tearing up the hills north of the port. THe gravel section I had found turned out to be the highlight of the cruise. All 3 of us were hanging it out big time. I even pulled off a couple scandinavian flicks that I was pretty tickled about. :D On this one straight stretch Phil and I were hitting about 100 mph I guess. I was too transfixed on the road to look but Phil said he snuck a quick look at the speedo and we were pushing the 100 mph mark!

We did a lot of tarmac too, including the Rosevalley hill climb, and that was super fun. Going down was more fun then coming up though.

I had all 4 wheels off the ground on two occasions during our tarmac adventures. Once on purpose and once quite by accident.

Phil and Vikash have way better suspension then me but I tried to make up for it with pure determination. They had a way of sneaking up on me in the turn though. I just couldn't carry the same speed in the turns nearly as easily as them. I really need to get my GR2's in.

I actually had more fun on the cruise then at the Shootout pretty much and I think I might host another meet sometime this fall that completely revolves around running the backroads around my house. They have to be among some of the best anywhere.

We finally ended up back at my house around 7:30 pm Sunday and Phil and V headed back to the greater DC area.

Thanks to everyone that came and next year will be even better!

P.S. I didn't get nearly the amount of pictures or video I was hoping for (I was elbow deep in oil and grease most of the time) but the little bit I did get will be up soon.:)

Matt,

Have you ever run 664 from Lock Haven up to 44?

If you haven't, do it! It's a bad ass road. I used to drive up that way to my uncle's A-frame from state college when I was up there.

There's almost a complete 180 degree sweeper turn with great banking. Going up, you can pretty much put the hammer down through that whole curve.

Matt (Shik) was really talking up next year's shootout. Hopefully a date will be made known earlier so we can have a huge LC turnout.

Anyway Friday night was a blast despite the fact that Matt, Vikash, and I were left 6 ounces of soda and 5 slices of pizza.

I'm sure it'd be easier if I could do more when we're working on the cars aside from holding a flash light but I'm learning.

Anyway, Saturday was a total bust, here I am getting ready to head down, making a few calls to some girls to see if I can borrow a couple hours of their time (for Phil and gearboxtech and a t-shirt) but noooo. It was my parent's anniversary so I got stolen away. Imagine how alone I felt sitting in my Mom's car at a light in Shamokin Dam when 3 turbo legacies roll past. I'm like "hey look there's a white sedan, it's loud, it has a sticker. Wait, that's Matt, and Phil and Vikash!"

Bummer, anyway Sunday sounds like it was a blast.

Gravel.

Jared- You were missed.

Scott- Jen said the game was really intense.

Josh- I think I've heard about that rd but I've never driven it. A friend of mine burned his brakes up on that rd and almost crashed.

I'll definitely have to check it out.

Sam- We were wondering where you were. What happend on Sunday? I thought you were coming for the cruise.

Shik did say that next year is going to be huge. EasyStreet is going to bring their whole fleet. They are going to raffle off a brand new WRX and SOA might promote it too. They're going to try and put a full page add in Sport Compact Car and maybe some other mags too. Should be a big time event.

Everyone should try and plan for next years F&S and Shootout.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that I'm muggified now too thanks to Vikash. :D

It's cool.

I might actually try and host an all backroads cruise/meet, later this fall. It was so much fun that I think it would make a great weekend. We'll see.

Damn that sounds like it was so much fun. I'm glad everyone had a good time and avoided the 5-0 too :). My best friend goes to Penn. State so next year I'll definately have to get my ass up there (I know I know, I keep saying it) but too much fun is being missed down here in VA. I look forward to the pics and videos.

Matt - How'd your suspension handle the airborn moments, and how 'determined' were you at these points?

You definitely need to get your arss up here!

Hmm, rereading my post it comes across as if I had all 4 wheels off the ground during the hillclimb, I didn't. I had all 4 off the ground once going over an actual road jump and the other time going over a small bridge that was raised during a twisty section of tarmac. The second one I wasn't even trying to do. It snuck up on me. :)

The suspension handled it pretty good but I wasn't like a foot in the air or anything. I was probably only an inch or two off the ground max. It was still really fun though.

I was pretty determined through out the whole drive but I never really took it too far or too close to the edge. I just had to work harder in the corners then Phil and Vikash because my suspension is jello. I'd enter a turn 15 car lengths ahead of Phil and exit the turn 8 car lengths ahead some times. I just couldn't carry the same speed as them unless I really pushed it.

That sounds great Matt. Someday I'll have a suspension that will handle some air but until then I'm a little afraid I'll land and just sit there :), though I have just about decompressed my struts all the way but still no daylight.
And I know completely how you feel trying to keep up with Phil and Vikash, well maybe not completely but my brother can now keep infront of me in the turns with his new 04 mazda 3. I can do a pretty good job keeping up if I let the tires make some noise but I gotta keep my 'brotherly' pride in check and not go too hard :). It's not worth spinning out trying to keep up with a superior suspension setup.

Aw, yeah!

This was the best weekend I've had in a really long time. It was kind of a bummer that so few people came, but those present at each event did make it great. It was really cool to meet you, Sam.

I think of the three of us, Phil was definitely fastest on the gravel roads. He closed in on you a little while either pulling away from me or staying the same distance from me on most of the curves. On the tarmac it was more equal (at least between me and Phil), probably because the skill difference wasn't so great.

I probably shaved quite a bit of live off these Kumhos, but it was worth it. :)

Thanks, Matt, for setting up such an awesome weekend and for being such a generous host.

I'd have one concern about planning a big backroads cruise... there were times when we... umm... did things that probably weren't quite 100% legal. I'm not a lawyer so I don't know. But I wouldn't be surprised if the authorities were called at least once on this past Sunday. If we had a lot of cars, many of them loud (they notice that), and our route were publicly announced beforehand, that might end up causing trouble for us that we don't want. I dunno, maybe it's not a big deal.

Yeah, I didn't have the luxery of going full tilt into the turns on the gravel being that I was leading. I was braking a little early and stuff to make sure we didn't take out someone walking the family dog or an oncoming car in the blind spots (pretty much the whole rd). I was a bit timid of because of this.

I think Phil was braking much later then I was and being a little more aggresive and carrying more speed on entry to the corners.

Some of the time I did pull away from him though too, especially exiting turns but he would draw me back in at the next one.

Man, it was fun.

Next time I'll make one of you lead.

I know what you mean about the cruise. The more people, the harder it would be to pull off. I wouldn't display our route though, it would just be a follow me kinda thing for sure. We probably just wouldn't have the luxery of doing the same stretches of rd more then once like we were doing. We'd have to hit an area and move on. I think it would be exciting.

If we just had the same amount of cars as at the F&S I think we'd be ok. Any more then that would most likely be asking for trouble though for sure.

Yeah, I definitely benefitted from seeing the two of you go through each corner before I did.

Yeah, we would have to be very very careful. We've seen some times when people weren't even doing anything against the rules and they got in some trouble just because of how screwed up things are.
