a friend of mine got a ride in it when it only had one turbo on it with the supercharger. according to him it was like a american muscle car, no matter where you were or what gear you were in, hit the gas and you light up the tires.

Why two parrallel turbos the same size (not sequential?) if they both feed the same intercooler? What's the point?

A dual MBC is used so you can have two boost settings. You dial one MBC in to your low boost setting, dial the other MBC to your high boost setting, and then use a cockpit switch to select.snowboarded wrote:Why would he have 4 (that i saw) turbo xs mbc's?
Then, you see two of these "dual MBC's" because they one for each turbo.

doh! I'm a retard. Thanks Art
Do you think that he would leave one set at a lower boost level and one at a higher boost level all the time? I ask this since he has the same size turbos, would this help one to act as a smaller turbo and spool faster?
Not sure it would, but just a random thought.

they dont actualy fight each other as odd as that might sound. if you look at the dyno chart for the thing the supercharger turns off for about 250rpms before the turbos hit. its the coolest chart ever. it almost looks like they had to shift but not really.AWD_addict wrote:Looks great, but seems like the supercharger or the turbos would be fighting each other depending where you're at in the rev range.

What I think is funny is that the VW guys are saying that the engine is to puny to spool not one, but two GT30R's.
I know, for a fact, that the EJ257 CAN, and DOES, spool the shit out of a GT30R. It doesn't hit until about 4000 RPM, but when it does, holy shit.
What you need to think about, is how the system compliments each other.
The GT30R is efficient on the EJ257 at something like 19psi. That's the rail. It's a BIG turbo. It can spin 19psi, and it can flow a LOT of air at 19psi. It hits late, but holy cow, watch out when it does. The GT35R is a bit laggier, but it hits even harder. If you do some searching, when it was single-turbo, it WAS running the blower and a GT35R.
When you twin charge, however, you can do fun things. What kinds of fun things? Well, for starters, you can spool the shit out of a big ass turbo, early on.
So, I'd venture to guess (without seeing the dyno chart or hearing what the builder has to say), that you run the blower up to whatever RPM you can before it becomes a restriction.
What you now have, is two turbos huffing the shit out of the atmosphere, feeding directly into the inlet of a supercharger (A whipple charger, at that, this guy isn't fucking around).
Two GT30R's combined can flow what a GT35R can flow at some ungodly high boost level. I'd venture to guess that they can flow similar quantities of air at about 2/3 the boost level of a GT35R.
And the best thing to spool that? Is an incredibly efficient supercharge on a clutch and an electronic switch to disengage and spin freely as soon as it is restricting air.
There's a benefit, again, of a whipple charger. It compresses air in it's case, and forces it into the engine. This is a really good thing, because you can, effectively, set it up to make boost as the engine is idling. More air going into the engine, more air coming out of the engine, and more air to spool the shit out of some turbos.
So instead of ONE GT35R that would take forever to get to 30-ish PSI (in a non-SC situation, probably around 5,000RPM, in this situation, probably closer to 4,000 RPM), you can get TWO GT30R's to 20psi at around 3000RPM. Oddly enough, I make 18psi at around 2800RPM on a 16G. You can surely see the advantage of being able to spool a setup that would flow nearly 20lbs of air MORE than a 16g, at almost the same RPM.
The glory of twin charging. You could boost the SHIT out of that setup, without breaking a sweat, and easily make 800whp assuming you can build the tranny and drivetrain up to that spec. Another cool thing, is you could make that 800whp, without breaking 8000RPM, and you could probably even make most of the torque at 2000 RPM. If it can be tuned right (which I bet it can be), I bet this car could easily run mid (maybe low) 9's before traction and weight and areodynamics really get the best of the car.
Cool

Midnight in a Perfect World on Amazon or order anywhere. The first book in a quartet chronicling the rise of a man from angry criminal to philanthropist. Midnight... is a distopic noirish novel featuring 'Duchess', a modified 1990 Subaru Legacy wagon.

Of course, there aren't any Subarus here to break down, but in my driving, the only Subaru I've seen broken down on the side of the road is the XT6 in my caravan on the way back from the Dragon in 04 (only broke a timing belt).
VW's in general are junk. The only ones I would consider owning would be the real old ones (old Beetle, Ghia, etc.)

A local just did a STi swap with his LGT. Forester Turbo manifold, STI TMIC, some gangster turbo (roughly equalivent to an 18G), and IIRC, that's it. Running a UTEC, I don't know the exact numbers (hadn't been tuned when I saw it last), but the estimates were around 320-340whp.
