lol, never expect an auto parts store employee to know anything about parts. Seriously, I'd know, I work there.
Honestly, your best bet is to find a girl there, they usually know about the parts because they get hassled all the time by men who think that they don't. They're also humble enough (due to said men questioning everything they say) to pass you onto someone else with a specialty in that particular field.
There's a girl at the parts store that I work at (schucks, never ever buy anything from there) who has rebuilt her 56 chevy truck from the ground up. She knows her old vehicle shit. I, on the other hand couldn't care less about it. But I "know" (know in the sense that I have a basic understanding of how/why they work and some random specifications) turbos and subarus and some hondas. We work well together(even though she's disgusting) because we are able to switch off between customers to get them the parts and expertise needed. There's only one man at the entire store that has the kind of humility to know when someone else will know the awnser better than him, and he's our vw specialist.

yeah my mom has worked at advance auto for several years, in several locations... worked her way up from "detailer" (shelf stocker) to management... the people there generally suck, but find a greasy looking guy with tattoos and sometimes they'll know what's up if you're buying chevy parts (not to stereotype)

LOL!!!
I had a guy at my local advance try to sell me a centerforce clutch that was returned. He said it was for a legacy and would sell it to me for $50.00. I ran the numbers on the CF's website and it was for an RX-7.
What retards. (unless you work for them)

Did you ask the right question -- " I want a manual boost controller?" and that was his response? Or did you ask for a manual turbo controller? Responses, no matter how idiotic, are usually tailored to the question in a fairlu coherent and relevant manner.

I'd say you have more than a basic understanding Laurel...
My favorite is at our local Autozone (which I used to think was the lesser of all evils in the autoparts world, until I found Carquest) there is this lovely (I mean that extremely sarcastically!!) lady named Krystal...she is not only one of the most repulsive looking individuals on the planet, but she is also probably one of the most annoying. She treats customers like shit, and really doesn't know what she is doing. I especially love trying to describe something to her over the phone...I have spent half and hour before and got nowhere... At any rate...my conclusion is that if you want parts for something that doesn't say Ford, Chevy or Dodge on it...you are best off going to a specialty store... I used to work at a Volkswagen Parts Store and Wrecking yard (you can guess which end of that I worked in
) and it was quite nice because #1 I owned a Volkswagen (air cooled mind you, none of this h20 crap) and #2 I didn't have to deal with certain ethnicities of people coming in wanting parts for their Chevy Celebrity.
My rant...sorry guys

"What's that?"
"You use it to control the amount of boost the turbo puts out"
"You can't manully control a turbo"

I don't want anyone on this bbs to ever complain of unemployment. It seems that since all of you are so competant and able at the end of the wrench, as well as capable of explaining what you know, that each of you should be gauranteed a job at any schmucks, autozone, or pepboys.

If you dont know cars, you shouldnt be working at a job that revolves around them. There are plenty of other jobs in burger flipping and such.
I work as a computer technician, before that I worked in computer sales. How would you feel if you went into a store like Staples or Best Buy and the sales guy knew less about the product than you did?

Actually I dont know about alpines but really top of the line radios DO NOT have detachable face because doing so makes the volume adjustment only possible digitally. The best way to control the volume is in analog via a potentiometer. The key is not to keep switching audio in a cd player from analog and digital and back and vise versa.BAC5.2 wrote:The sales person at Best Buy said the top of the line Alpine headunit I was buying did not have a detachable face.
On the main topic though I dont think anyone should expect someone to know about cars or computers or what have you in stores like that. These are kids probably going through college and for them its just some extra cash for beer or drugs or what have you. Its buyer beware right. I mean Its your responsibility to inform yourself before you go out to buy something. Many people do not take the time to educate themselves they blindly go to stores and are "steered" in one direction or another. I guess my point is that if your going to buy something you should find it to be a pleasant surprise if there is someone at the store who has literally gone above and beyond his responsibility of people herding to learn something for themselves. Just do what I do, assume everyone is a total fucking idiot until they prove otherwise.

Mike, there is a difference between being ignorant and admitting it, and trying to find out the answer, and being ignorant and telling the customer that they're wrong.
I was in an electronics store a couple months ago and overheard a staff member telling a customer there was no such thing as a firewall built into a motherboard. Total BS.
If I dont know any answer, I tell the customer "I dont know, but let me see if I can find out for you"

Marissa? My friend Craig deals with Lake City NAPA on a fairly regular basis, and knows of her. He just promised me that next time he sees her he's going to tell her to get to the bbs.206er wrote:hey laurel, do you know the girl who works at lake city NAPA? she drives a SS and really knows her subaru shit. she's cute too.
99% of the women that work at auto parts stores are likely not even biologically women. believe me, I know.
