Hella 550 Mounts

Post by Splinter »

Last night I was trying to put in my new Hellas, behind the grill, and I ran into a couple problems.

I bolted them in upside down, to that metal piece that goes across the top of the grill section (the one the radiator clamps bolt to). I drilled a couple smallish holes and worked them larger using a tapered punch.

They bolt in fine, but they dont clear the lip thats under the grill entirely, and whats worse, I cant angle them up to horizontal, so Im gonna have to mount them the right way up, into the metal chassis under the grill

Whats the best way of going about that? As far as I can tell, theres no way of getting my hands inside that thing to do up the bolt, and the metal looks thicker, so I dont think I can just work it open.

Ah, the problem I had ... You can get a nut inside the bumper beam if you're an amateur contortionist and pop half the bumper cover off. It really sucks and when the body shop that did my rust removed them against my instruction and reattached them poorly (since they didn't know the contortionist method to tighten) I just pulled them off and left them off.

The real way to do this is to pull the radiator and get a 90 deg drill with a hole saw to open up some room for your hands/tools. Another way (since you're mounting yours underneath, which is easier) would be to use a smaller hole saw to open up a finger hole on each side of where you'll put the nuts & washers and get some kind of box wrench with a hinged head to get them tight.

You need molly bolts. Allows you to attach a fastener when you don't have access to the rear.
