Hey all,
Just a few questions I am hoping someone can answer. First I was
driving my Legacy yesterday and I noticed at around 3000 RPM and 5000
RPM I am getting a strange noise from the engine that sounds like a
growl. It's happening when accelerating, when the engine decellerates
after I take my foot off the gas, and when I hold the accelerator
steady at 3000 RPM. I am thinking that it may be some harmonic
resonance from somewhere in the engine compartment but not sure. If
anyone has this noise or has an idea please tell me.
Secondly I am wanting to instal an HBC or something of the sort but
as of right now I dont have an exaust or intake(or k&n) and am
wondering what and where people are getting there cat-backs and
intakes. One thing that is concerning me is the fact that I have
heard alot about the MAF sensors breaking in the imprezas with
intakes
and I wonder if any of the first gen Legacys are having that problem
too.
Also does anyone know where one can get an intercooler?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Have you removed the fender resonator? Mine has similar noises since
i removed mine. Check and make sure all hoses are tight otherwise.
I'll be installing an HBC on an otherwise unmodified engine, unless
the downpipe comes first, but from what Matt has said, it's much
better at pressure regulation than the stock so you should still see
a difference even at stock levels.
I'm pretty sure most people take their cars into an independent shop
and have the cat-backs installed. Unless you want a performance-
sounding muffler, just about anything will do as long as it's mated
to a wider exhaust. As for a downpipe, it's both technically illegal
and a custom part, so getting one is more a matter of finding a shop
that'll make one, and the $$$ to have it done, or someone that's
selling theirs.
MAFs on Imprezas are usually being fried because of vibration and bad
blowoff valve placement. To my knowledge there's no problem with the
Legacy ones.
I'm still looking for an Intercooler, though not too hard. Other
stuff comes first.
I got my gauge from Extreme Motorsports. I got it with their install
kit that came with the tubing and connectors. To be honest, i'd find
an Autometer gauge and get the gauge pod i used instead of hacking up
the vdo one. If you decide to get the vdo, feel free to ask about
installing it in the pod, if that's what you plan to do.

Jay, how many miles on your car? I've heard Legacy water pumps make anything
from a squealing sound to a grinding sound. They are pretty common to go bad
anytime after 100,000 miles. Get under the hood and work the throttle with
your hand, maybe you will be able to hear it a bit better.
Definitely just go to your local exhaust shop and have them make you a cat
back- no less then 2.5" in diameter. And leave the cat and resonator off. If
they give you a problem, show them that your car's main cat is in the
downpipe. It doesn't have to be mandrel bent either. Other then the
downpipe, the Legacy exhaust is very straight so you are not going to lose
any performance by just getting the standard "crimp" bend job done on the
few bends that are in the system. I offered to take my Legacy down to
RalliSpec so then can duplicate my downpipe for others, but they are
overwhelmingly swamped with Impreza stuff at the moment. Plus, with the WRX
coming soon, chances are there will be quite a few downpipes available for
it which should fit with little problems, you'll just have to wait a while.
As far as an intake goes, I personally think that a K&N panel filter with
the inner fender baffle removed and a cold air tube leading up to the air
box is a very nice set-up. One thing I do like about my intake though( made
locally) is that it straightens out the air flow a bit more then the stock
90 degree bend from the MAS to intake tube does. And the only MAS sensors
that are a bit shaky are the 99 "hot film" type used on the SOHC cars,
although it's never impossible for any MAS to go bad, just not common.
As far as getting an intercooler, you can try the classified section on
MRT's site in Austrailia or even the UK guys at www.22b.com . Many of them
upgrade to newer ones. If you get a 93-96, it is a fairly easy swap(get the
intercooler pipe as well!!!). If you get a 97 or later, you will have to
custom fabricate your own intercooler pipe that enters from the side not the
bottom, as the stock one will not work. Good luck.

My car has 96,000 miles on the clock and the fender
resonator is still intact but the heat sheild is long
gone. Matt you have a buyer for your HBC yet?

I have had issues with the MAS. I honestly couldn't tell you whether it
just went bad...or related to my intake mod. I have an Akimoto (K&N Style
conical filter) that I've mated to the MAS and added some custom bracing and
bracket. You can see pics and sorta what I did on my site
www.personal.psu.edu/jcc189/subaru/subaru.html The links page is not
working because PSU screwed me and shrank my webspace....so I had to add
more....hopefully I can get it fixed within the next week.
Any more questions feel free to ask.....one more thing...the MAS problem was
a major intermittent issue...it was different even in different
seasons....temperature changes....so I don't know if the element was just on
it's way out or what....?

Jay, yeah, Dave bought the Hallman.
I would wonder about the water pump, but again, if you could get a bit
closer to the engine and listen for it, either with someone else in the car
or by working the throttle with your hand, it would be much easier to
locate, if indeed it is coming from the engine. The water pump is in the
front of the motor behind the Timing Belt covers(for the most part). If it
is that, this is where the sound would be coming from. Keep us updated.
