Headlights dim near redline

Post by Splinter »

Not that its annoying, it happens so rarely and for such a short amount of time that it took me a few tries to make sure it was actually happening

Just wondering if its a symptom of some other problem

Basically, in the half second or second between 6000rpm and the AT gear change (when forcing high changes by leaving the selector in 1 or 2), the headlights dim to about half voltage

I second that. Check alternator belt tension.

My ALT belt was slipping bad, and under load the lights would dim.

Check that and see.

Wouldn't you hear that squealing as it slipped, though?

not necessarily... if you're at redline with throaty exhaust and that "boxer growl" we all love so much

if your belt is old, it will be glazed, ie slick and it will slip and not be noisy.

get a new alt. belt, and proper tension. cheap fix.

If you find that its not the belt check the ground for the headlight. During High RPM you are requiring a lot of juice. If the ground is getting bad you might not be flowing enough for the headlights all the time. This can happen inconsistantly, wouldn't have to be every time you run the engine hard.
