HVAC bulbs

Post by jnorion »

I'm getting ready to change some lights in my dash, and I'd like to change the color of the HVAC lighting. I've been trying to find info on what bulbs are back there and I'm not having much luck. So far I've found that it might be a Radio Shack p/n #7219, or it might be something special that Subaru only sells, but I haven't found anything conclusive.

Does anyone have a final answer on this?

Yeah, the final answer was not to try it, unless you're super happy lucky. Its a pain in the ass, you really want different colored bulbs that badly?

Mine have a sweeping outage, which I've narrowed down to a bad ground.

I think the problem with the HVAC bulbs is that the buttons themselves have a colored plastic piece on them that make the buttons appear a certain color. You'd have to remove that to change the color I believe.

That aside, getting at that cluster is a real PITA; most of us advise tearing it apart only if you have bulbs out.

I was planning on using red LEDs. I've used them in cars with a green overlay before and they showed through fine... slightly less red than if there wasn't an overlay but it still looked good. I guess I get to be a pioneer. ;)

What's your plan for this? You're gonna take the hvac unit out of the dash, then take it apart?

You do understand the buttons are aluminium, right?

I don't care about the lights on the buttons. I just want to change the backlighting on the face of the unit... fan markings and temperature settings and stuff. I'll probably go pull one at the junkyard and just look it over there and leave it, so I don't have to take mine apart twice. But if I can't find a direct replacement I will probably just disconnect the lights that are already there and hard wire some LEDs in.
