Fear, loathing and crankshaft pulley wrenches...

Post by Samuel Barrett »

Does anyone have one of these? Dumb question... Probably not unless
you are a full-time Subie mechanic and if you did you proabably paid
a premium for it and you're not about to ship it off to someone you
don't know so he can borrow it for a 15 minutes use...

I'm trying to change the timing belt on the wagon and geuss what -
custom tool req'd. to lock that crankshaft up so you can remove the
nut. Yucky.

So has anyone done this before and what did you do to get around it?

In other news:

I got the S.O.A. manuals for the BC - BF Subaru Legacy to day from
UPS!!!! WHooo Hooo! Exciting stuff... well, to me it is O.K.

6 manuals all told. All specs. Not much commentary. The transmission
manual is frigging amazing! Actually I have to re-word that. The
Automatic section of the transimission manual is frigging amazing! I
don't remember when the first auto trannys were becomming commonly
availible to production vehicles but I'm amazed by how complex they
are! Oh but the transmission manual is not to be out done (in volume
at least) by the - can you geuss? The air conditioning sub-system.
Good greif!

So it looks like the conversion to making my Legacy a honest car
again (upgrading to a turbo) is more a function of parts than
anything else. I can't find anything about the AT that is different
from the turbo to the non-turbo. I'll have to verify this - or maybe
one of you have done a conversion before and can tell me. Lots of
bedtime reading!

If you guys want any specs details let me know and I'll hook you up
as best I can. :o)

Fear, loathing and crankshaft pulley wrenches...

When I changed timing balt and head gaskets on my old 90 Lsedan, I pushed a
length of nylon rope into the spark plug hole. This effectively "locked up"
the motor so I could loosen pulleys. This is an old trick I used from my
motocross days so I am not sure if it is totally safe on a Subaru engine, but
it worked for me.

YOU DID WHAT???!!!

Dude, you have to explain that a little better. How does pushing a
length of nylon rope into the combustion chamber lock up an engine? I
am in dis-belief and awe at the same time!

That's fascinating and horrifying in the same way.

By filling the combustion chamber with a solid mass, the piston can
not move up and it halts the crankshaft, therefore allowing you to
remove the nut/bolt.

Ingenious but kinda wacky!

Fear, loathing and crankshaft pulley wrenches...

You must have the piston at bottom dead center(farthest away from the
cylinder head),then you push in as much nylon rope as you can through the
spark plug hole. When you turn the crankshaft ,the piston will move back
towards the cylinder head. The rope that is inside the cylinder will keep the
piston from reaching top dead center(when the piston is at its closest point
to the cylinder head). The piston has to reach TDC(top dead center)before it
can reverse direction and head back to BDC.If the piston cannot move anymore
the engine is "locked up".Nylon rope should be soft enough to prevent damage
to any engine internals, but stiff enough to push into the hole.I cannot
guarantee safety to your engine with this procedure, but like I said,it
worked for me.Good luck with your project. Bill C.
