I hate the rear triangle windows! tinting mishaps.

Post by greg donovan »

dont get me wrong, i love the way they look, but i am in the process of tinting the rear windows of my SS so that the sun doesnt cook my kids car seats so much.

one roll of tint is exactly enough to cover the two rear windows and the two damn triangle windows.

the best way to cover the triangle windows is to remove the trim of course. however, i have niether the time or desire to remove that much trim. i also dont have enough money to pay someone else to do it hence the 12 dollar wal mart tint.

so i get halfway through the first triangle and it isnt fitting right so i pull the film out and set it back down on the outside. as i am doing this it slips and lands on the gound. :x sticky side down of course.

so now i have two rear windows tinted to 5% and two untinted triangles.

back to wal mart to buy a whole roll to tint those two damn windows.

unless anyone has some good tips on how to do it i am not even going to attempt to put this stuff on the rear window.

if anyone want to do this themselves the axius stuff that wal mart sells is pretty good.

i used it on my other 2 cars a couple years ago and i have had no fading and no bubbling or peeling. the only trouble spots on the other jobs are the front corners becuase i didnt trim back from the edge far enough and i shut the door too soon and the gasket peeled the film back in the corner and got the adhesive dirty. otherwise they look great.

i also reccomend pulling the door panel as well. mine wasnt feeling like coming off tonight so i slid as much film as i could between the gasket and the window. hopefulling it will work out OK this time.

of course if i was paying someone to do this i would be pretty pissed w/the result. but since i did it for about 15 dollars i am pretty pleased and it should make driving my car around with the kids a lot more pleasant for everyone involved. those car seat buckles get hot, even if you cover them with a blanket.

Anyone have any experience with that custom cut tint on ebay?

There's usually stuff like this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/SUBARU-L ... dZViewItem

It says how it's already cut and stuff, how would that be to install, or would a trip to walmart be better? I know going to a pro is best, but is it worth it on a 16 year old car?

I don't know how you're cutting the tint....but the way I've seen the pro's do it, is cut it to fit on the outside of the window.

Clean all the windows, use a solution of soapy water to get the tint to adhear to the window, cut it to fit, and then install it.

Don't forget the ol' razor blade w/ windex to remove the stuff wiping won't get. Believe me, there's alot more stuff to remove than you'd think, especially with our old glass. Just be careful not to scratch the glass. Follow the contours the best you can and you should do fine.

this is the third car i have done.

that is what i was doing but the rear triangle is tricky to cut to the right size because of the dotmatrix looking crap around the border.

so i cut it a bit too big and then tried to fit it in the back and slip the extra material under the trim piece but the trim fit tighter on this car so that wasnt working so i pulled the film back onto the outside window to trim it some more since there isnt much room to work in there. while setting it back on the outside is when i dropped it.

You are supposed to apply tint to the inside of the glass, aren't you?

That's how it was done on my Legacy and every other car I've seen. Tinting on the outside seems like a bad idea.

I think he was setting it back on the outside to trim it down a little bit so he could fit it on the inside.....

why the hell would i put the tint on the outside? do you think i am a moron or something?

ironmonkey got it right.

for the third time it wasnt fitting right while trying to apply it to the INSIDE of the glass so i took it outside to trim it and dropped it.

tinting is not easy to do by yourself. it is much easier to have a helping hand for a couple of the steps.

also the best way to do it is to remove almost all the trim from the back of the car.

however that means you have to remove a lot of trim becuase of the way the pieces overlap

oh and the car looks really stupid w/out the triangle tinted.

and as much of a pain in the ass as this is i am still not paying someone 200 bucks to do this.

if i had 200 to blow on my car i would have a TMIC intalled by now.

and to avoid any confusion. i am not pissed at anyone in this thread.
