Post by pentypo »

Hi everyone my name is John andI have a drinking problem errr sorry I mean my name is John and I have a Legacy Turbo problem

I have just brought a 4 WD 92 Turbo Legacy 4 cam 2L Estate :), I have wanted one for ages

Mods so far ( owned it for 7 days)

Turbo gauge
Manual varable boost controler
Impreza Turbo wheels

being a UK car it has a water intercooler as standard and boost is set to 8.5 psi (.59 bar)

not one to hang around I quickly installed the turbo gauge as the car seemed a little slow, and then popped a cheepy manual boost controler in about 4 hours ago!! it certainly helps speed it up :) and only cost me £15 ( 24$ish )he he he don't you just lurve turbos

anyways all is going great it is now running at 11.56psi (.8 bar) sooooooooo why am I here you might ask........well go on ask......

Oh! ok thanks :)

well as far as I understand it I should be able to go a little bit higher ....13psi I believe ? before the ECU cuts off my fuel ? my question is should I, the motor has done 140000miles and seems very healthy the turbo whistles puuuurfickly and as a duo I feel it can take it, so here's my question just how far can I realisticly go on the stock motor bearing in mind the engine is totaly standard not even a k&N, should I stop at 11.56psi or push it higher.

Well nice talking to you guys

cheers

John, nice to have you here, and nice car. To be honest, I was somewhat surprised to here the factory boost on your cars was actually set slightly lower then our US spec Turbos(8.7 non-intercooled).

In any case, the rule of thumb I have always heard since being around turbo cars is 3-5psi above stock settings is usually within the safety margin the factory has built in them. The first things I would recommend doing before ANYTHING else is done(assuming it is tuned properly) is get a K&N filter(drop-in style is fine) and a VERY free flowing exhaust from the turbo back. This will help performance absolutely everywhere in the rev range, help spool up time of the turbo considerably, and eliminate back pressure(thus eliminating heat in the intake air). The difference in the way your car will feel will be shocking at least.

As far as the high miles, as long as the motor itself is in good shape, I wouldn't worry about the miles too much. Boost doesn't really hurt an engine, a poorly tuned engine will hurt an engine :) Besides, the filter and exhaust will probably be better for the engine the it's stock set-up. A win-win situation ;)

Well as I said my crappy little boost valve cost £15,took 10 mins to
fit and has probably given me another 30 bhp that equates to 2 bhp
per £1, now thats what I call a bargain!!!

your car being a 94 must be the newshape, I think ? so I'm not to
sure how that differs if it is

anyways it's nice to see someone else in the UK has a Legacy I was
beginning to think I was alllll alone :)

let me know how you get on with your upgrades it will be interesting
if removing the cat makes that much difference in the pre boost rev
range and also turbo pick up (lag) , I've heard superchips are a big
fat rip off so be carefull.

cheers

John

Hey what happened I posted a reply earlier on to this thread and
there's no sign of it?

thats really annoying! does this happen alot round here or is it just
sods law?

cheers

( in brief the reply said

will a k&N really help that much as it will surly be sucking hot air
from the engine bay instead of from the stock filter which sucks it
from the wing well?

Here's the deal with filter in the engine compartment. Yes it will suck
more hot air. It helps more in the lower rpm's & higher rpm's. I'm
probably goin to make a barrier to help separate the filter from the
engine compartment. If you have a turbo...the intercooler will help
take care of the hot air.

Check out my site www.personal.psu.edu/jcc189/subaru/subaru.html
I've got pics of my filter mod and other.

HellO I am a new turbo lister :)

Post by Alan Croxford »

I will second the warning on Superchips unless they have made some
changes I have a picture of what we found in a $400.00 Superchip deal
it is about $10-15 in parts and only would give a high boost fuel cut.

HellO I am a new turbo lister :)

Post by John Carlsson »

When you see one you will say fuck thats simple

http://www.xmission.com/~dac/centric/hbc.htm

here you go he's got a whole frigging guide on it

superchips will give you a fancy pants version of the above so you
can adjust it inside you car then give you a really loud dump valve (
you have one already but they won't tell you that... it's silent )
that will screw up your tickover and the diaphram or spring will
break in 6 months so you will need a new one then they will play
around with your ECU so the engine won't cut after 13 psi but so what
because you will be going so stupidly fast before 13 psi you won't
care and/or you will need to make lots of other mods so you engine
doesn't self distruct whist passing the 13 psi barrier anyway.

hey thats freaky your a motorcycle engineer because I drive a Honda
fireblade 900cc 0-60 in 2.5 seconds top speed 175mph but the funny
thing is I feel the speed more in my Legacy, go figure ay! must be
because I am sat relaxed in a nice comfy chiare a bit like watching
telly!

ha ha ha but fuck ! some mental time you've got to drive like a
fucking fruit loop to know whay a Legacy turbo shit can do ay!

cheers

John
