Cleaning Stuck Horn Buttons on Airbag Steering Wheel (pics!)

Post by Soul Shinobi »

Ever since I got my Legacy the horn buttons were a bit sticky. Once on a quiet residential road, at two AM, I pressed the horn just to see if it worked. It got stuck. It got stuck good. I pressed every corner of the button with no results and resorted to punching the steering wheel with my fist until it finally came free. I was so embarrassed. Since then I vowed to clean those buttons, and clean them damn well. You could try to just pry then out from the front and wind up breaking the surrounding plastic like I did, but why risk making things worse?

Without delay, here is my unnecessarily detailed and long post on how to do this thoroughly without breaking anything.

It is airbag equipped models that have horn buttons, so start by disconnecting the battery because we don't want airbags blowing up in our faces. You should wait over a minute to make sure the backup capacitor for the airbags is discharged as well.
Image

There are four bolts holding the airbag/horn button assembly onto the steering wheel, two on each side.
Image
Image

The two covers can be pried off easily, I use my fingers.
Image

The bolts require a Torx T-30 bit to unscrew. If you're weird like me you can buy one at your local auto-parts store then return it when you're done, so long as you didn't destroy the packaging (I'm like a surgeon).
Image

Removed the large yellow airbag connector first because the wires are shorter, then the white horn connector. To unlock the airbag connector, press down on the top of the connector on the right side just to the right of the green part hooking into it. The green button should then pop out on the left side of the connector.
Image

Bonus question: what's the only visible modification I've made to my Legacy here?
Image

To removed the horn buttons remove the screw from the metal plate and pull the red wire's connector off carefully with some needle nosed pliers.
Image

Next push out the horn button assembly. This is best done by pushing on the edge of the trim colored plastic through the center hole where the screw was. It takes a lot of force for something so simple, that's why it's best to push in the middle so that you don't bend it one way or another.
Image

If there's nothing to get a hold of in the middle you can try here.
Image

The resulting horn button assembly. Notice part of the plastic broken off at the top, that was from me trying to pry the button itself out earlier. I actually spent 15 minute trying to find that tiny plastic piece to glue it back on.
Image

Carefully remove the outer button from its casing by pushing in as many tabs as you can. A helpful friend may aid. Again you can see the piece I broke off from trying to pry the button out while it was in the steering wheel...
Image

Look at that CRAP. I don't even know what it is. Maybe the previous owner spilled coffee on the steering wheel somehow.
Image

Look for defects in the plastic like this and scraped them flat with an exacto knife or something similar.
Image

Also do the same for deformations you might have caused prying the button out, but if you did it right you shouldn't have pried it out.
Image

When reinstalling the airbag/horn assembly after plugging in the yellow airbag connector you MUST push in the green button on the left of the airbag connector before reconnecting battery or the airbag will NOT be enabled and the airbag light on the dash will always be on. In this picture the green button has not yet been pushed in.

Bonus question answer: The gauge needles have been painted red with a Sharpie marker.

That's a good unnecessarily detailed and long post.

The bonus question was too easy. :-D

I was worried it was too easy...

I realized when I started typing up the post how absurd it all was, but I had already taken and cropped the pictures...

The reason I went into such anal detail is because I feel that people on this forum rarely go into enough detail on a lot of things. I wanted my experience to be easily understood and reproduced by people who know little or nothing about cars, because I was in that state just seven months ago when I got my Legacy. My learning experience with cars has been slow and difficult because people on just about all forums rarely break things down for those who might be new to working with cars.

When I first got here, I thought the SAME thing and I still kind of do. On miataforum.com (I also own a miata) there are a lot of writeups like the one above.

Not having enough people like you is the reason all the new people (like me) say "I searched but couldnt find an answer"...

Good job!!!

Thank you! You alone have made my efforts worth it, I'm so grateful. :-D

I think I'll check out that forum for both the education of it and also because I'm considering going 50/50 on a used Miata with my brother. Thanks again.

You might as well try to clean both while you've got the thing apart, even if one doesn't stick yet.

Possibly, but they're run off a relay and have an inline fuse.
