Actually, it's more likely the retainer clip for the inner door handle spring.

my rear driver door was doing the exact same thing, and it turned out that the little plastic piece that holds part of the door handle spring had broken. This let the spring press against the back of the lock button and push it locked. That way you would be forced to hold the lock button down while opening the door from the inside.

I'll look into testing the seleniods....

so this spring is right behind the actual plastic handle....did you find a way to fix it?

THANK YOU BOTH

Orange lock page did the trick for 3 of my doors that were having this problem.

Doh! Forgot about the damn interior lock! I fixed them with a steel pin through the body to do the job of holding the spring. I removed the handle, drilled some holes on each side at approximately the same position that the plastic hook thing had resided and ran a 1/16 rod through, hooking both ends on the outside so the rod wouldn't fall through. The PITA was fitting the spring hook over the rod while trying to slide it across the body. Make sure you set up the rod so that it won't interfere with the handle's operation. Done right it should last the life of the car and be invisible.

I tied mine back with speaker wire using the HobieGary system. Extremely effective.
