basically it means if the cams aren't timed correctly, the piston can hit
the valve if it comes up and the valve is open.
like if a timing belt breaks when the valve is open, the piston will hit the
valve when the piston reaches TDC :^)
Hi does anybody know if my 92 4wd turbo legacy has this engine ? I am getting worried if my cam belt breaks
cheers

Don't worry about it. Unless you have a 2.5 - then you will mess something up for sure. If you have the NA 2.2 you won't have a problem.

what is an interference engine design
The EJ20 is an interference engine, and belt replacement is recommended every 70,000kms and you may as well do the hydraulic tensioner whilst you are there, ...this is easy to perform as long as you are careful with retiming the engine. The idler pulleys can use replacement at subsequent changes.
