03 WRX springs/struts on 90 legacy FWD??

Post by beater_legacy »

I just read through a lot of posts and can't find the answer I'm looking for. There is a local guy parting out an 03 WRX and I'm wanting some parts of it for my 90 Legacy FWD.

I read that 04+ will fit 90-91 w/o modification and the 03s will fit 92-? w/o modification. What modification would be needed to get the 03 springs/struts to work on my 90 Legacy FWD? Or is it even possible?

Thanks,
Brandon

The rear struts won't work. FWD rears are different than AWD rears.

Does that go for all options? Will the 04s work?

Thanks,

The front struts in a FWD legacy are the same as AWD front struts.

FWD rear struts are physically different from all years AWD rear struts.

Subaru made the mounts different between AWD and FWD rears, so no matter what year you try and fit on the back of a FWD car, it won't work.

Fronts will, however.

Sorry for so many questions but what would I need to change out in the rear to be able to mount up AWD springs/struts? I'm talking bare bones. I have tossed around the idea of swapping in an AWD drivetrain but I don't think it will ever get done. There is a guy locally with an 03 WRX for parts and I know of an AWD 90-91 Legacy at a local junkyard as well as an Outback.

you would have to change thre rear spindles and then get a pair of CV axles for the rear and cut them up and bolt them into the rear spindles and then you could use the awd rear struts. the wheel bearings in the FWD cars are different than the AWD bearings. i am sure there is more to it than that but i am not sure.

the FWD struts are longer than the AWD rear struts.

it is too much trouble to make work for the money you would save on the rear struts. but yes it can be done.

you can get the KYB GR-2 for the FWD legacy on all 4 corners and they are reasobaly priced and i think they work just fine on the legacy.
