Wheel Bearing Woes

How much should it cost (in the US) to replace wheel bearings on a 91
legacy turbo? I have only talked with one shop so far and the price
was very disheartening. Not only that but he did not believe me that
my legacy was a turbo and when I insisted he told me it was
some "weirdo variant", probably not a shop I want to be dealing
with...Anyway, some help on the wheel bearing thing is much
appreciated.
Kevin

I have seen a price of $400 for both rear wheel bearings, including
labor. In regards to that shop, I personally would avoid it. I can
understand someone being surprised your car is a turbo, but to not
believe you and call it a weirdo variant, that's strange.

I did my own and all the bearings and seals were around 115$..and
like 50$ to have them pressed in/out one the parts were off the car..

so a shop should would charge you like 200-250$ for parts, and if
they have there own press about 10 minutes per wheel once there off
the car and maybe 25 minutes per front wheel, 20 back to take it off
and put it back on..

so around 2- 2 1/2 hours at the most..120-150$ labor...320-450$, just
guessing..the book may say 3 hours or more and that's what they will
charge, even if it takes 2 hours..

Wheel Bearing Woes

Post by Gord »

Hi

just put one in my 91 Legacy turbo. the bearing and seals cost $107(non Subie parts) and the $161 to have them installed. those prices are Canadian $ which run about $10US=$15Cdn. i live in Nova Scotia known for the salt on the roads and in the the air so for stuff like that i have a shop do it because it takes heat and special tools to take things apart. Rust is a right bugger.

The bad news was that the ABS sensor had to be removed to heat the spindle to get the old bearing off. the sensor didn't survive this, $300 more and i had a new sensor and installed it myself, turn out that the Subaru dealers budget for a new sensor everytime the change a wheel bearing, the new sensors have a plastic case thought and probably won't rust in.

anyway that my tail of woe.

Gord

Oh, and yeah, you probably shouldn't go to that guy. He'll probably tell you
that you have loose muffler bearings.
